What about a monthly general song contest, and at the end of the year, the winners from each month are voted on as a "Wacky Song of the Year". Just spitballin' here...wuddeva.

Ben, I didn't mean that it would upset anybody, just that I would have a hard time writing a funny song about it.
The best one so far is "It's Fucking Cold Outside", which pretty much covers the whole topic.
I could turn it into a Sharknado theme, with polar bears coming out of the vortex, but that's reaching.

I didn't think about the fact that the polar vortex was a serious topic. I just thought that since this was a huge topic a songwriting contest about this would be something. Other than that I didn't know what else I could come up with for a theme but hopefully I can work on other ideas.

I guess just to be on the safe side I will scrap the polar vortex theme for the songwriting contest. Until then I'll work on other ideas. The last thing I want to do is to possibly upset people over making funny songs about a serious topic.

Topical weather themes can be iffy - especially something transient like that AND when the contest's payoff arrives, everyone will be begging for spring. Interest will have waned; your window of opportunity will have closed.

Negative themes are fine for shows - especially for mine. Contests need to be somewhat positive...and ever so slightly generalized in theme to drag in the most participants. And extreme topicality is death.

Far be it from me to suggest you come up with another theme. It's against my non-interference policy. "Leave people the hell alone" and all that. This policy helps keep one alive. It's worked for me for quite a while.

Maybe, just maybe, you could come up with a theme artists can write about anytime...before I do. If I knew for certain Wayne would back me up (I can't even get him to answer my e-mails, let alone something like this. I think he's annoyed that I use explicit songs in TMMS) and that perhaps some FuMPers would contribute songs, I'd have started a contest last month right at the time of the year when we lose the most active members.

Maybe it's me, but I think the site's flagship show should get off its spavined ass and take responsibility for things like contests. I need to do more to drag in active membership and not use poor health as an excuse for not doing these things.

Ben,
You know that I love song contests, but I'm not sure I could get a song ready, being busy with stuff.
Also, I'm having trouble thinking of a comic angle on the polar vortex, it's such a painfully serious topic.
What about a general songwriting contest, on any topic. You could call it the "Non-FAWM Participant's Songwriting Contest". Or something.

This sounds awesome. I'll definitely participate if you do hold the contest! The end of February is ideal for me too.

Hey guys, Wacky Ben here with another announcement. For quite sometime I always wanted to hold my very own songwriting contest yet I could never think of what it should be about. However earlier this evening I finally figured out an idea so here it is. The first even songwriting contest for Ben's Wacky Radio will be on the polar vortex that has been going on since earlier this month. I didn't know when I should officially begin the songwriting contest because I wasn't sure when it would be a good time to start. However I was asked if this could wait until the end of February because of the February Album Writing Month which I pretty much agreed on even though my original idea was to announce the winners on the first week of spring which would be in March but I guess that can wait.
All in all folks the songwriting contest isn't official yet hence why I labeled it as possible, but when everything works out I'll make the official announcement and the one big thing I need to figure out the prizes for the winners which is the hard part. But one thing to keep in mind is that this contest is about the polar vortex and nothing else.
So that is my announcement and when everything is official I will make the announcement in the near future. Until next time take care and remember to not break your funny bones.
