Okay.... That's what I get for believing everything I read online. I pulled out my record catalogues and at least know where the story might have come from.
Gary S Paxton was under contract with the "Brent" label as a duo named Skip And Flip. Paxton was "Flip", thus the name on Alley Oop's label. They continued to record for "Brent" up to 1962 and released one more record as Skip And Flip in 1963 on the "California" label.
Alley Oop was released in 1960 on the "Lute" label.
There was a group called The Argyles on the "Brent" label in 1959, but whether or not this was Gary S Paxton is not clear to me.
