fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d did either of these stations carry Dr. Demento around 1982 or 83?

--- djscott I believe Dr.Demento used to air on WMMR in Philadelphia.
Both WMMR and WYSP; I first heard the Doctor on 'YSP, I believe, back in 1976 or thereabouts. ;)

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d He's been doing that for probably 10 years now. As he prepares for each radio shows, he collects the songs, in 1997 onto a stand-alone CD-recorder, but mostly likely now, on his computer. In shows before that, you could hear the snap of the capstan on a reel-to-reel deck as he introduced the songs on his work tapes. The tapes would likely be rerecorded, while burnt CDs might have been filed away. I don't know if he has done any discs for his long-term enjoyment instead of the short-term use for the show.

--- BorisBadenov There would be a great deal of merit in the Doctor digitizing his collection.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Well, that's good to hear. If I were his age I don't think I'd be ready to retire yet.
There would be a great deal of merit in the Doctor digitizing his collection. I somehow suspect that a lot of his older 78s may be the only copies of those works still in existence, or one of only a handful. I doubt anyone outside a major library or perhaps the Library of Congress has as extensive a collection. Putting some of the old, rare, public-domain works up for research and study would be a great benefit to musical scholarship.
I hope he's made provisions for when he passes on to donate his physical collection to a worthy institution -- possibly Reed College, his alma mater, or maybe there's a recorded sound library at USC or UCLA that could accept it. If I were him, though, I would resist selling off the collection. Of course I can't speak for the Doctor, but I know that the old vinyl and shellac and sleeves have a smell and a feel and a presence that the convenience of digitized copies could of course never replace. It probably reminds him of when he was a kid collecting records at thrift stores in Minnesota.
--- peppertree5706 I heard from someone who knows Dr. D. that he has no plans to retire. I still consider it speculation.
No doubt, the rise of corporate radio and decline of personal ownership has been bad for The Dr. Demento Show.
The value of Dr. D's record collection is great. I know a deejay who retired and recorded his 17000 record collection to .mp3 and is in the process of selling his collection on ebay. A long process, but one that finances his retirement. Dr. D has many more records and ones that are more valuable. He too, could record his vinyl collection and sell it, then make a lot of money for his retirement.
I don't think we will have to take up a collection for him. But if he needs help, I would be willing to help.
Merry Christmas

--- BorisBadenov I have to wonder if the economics of highly-concentrated corporate-controlled radio hasn't undercut his business, and his web site hasn't panned out the way he wanted.
I would hate to think of a world without Doctor Demento, any more than I like to think of a world without Captain Kangaroo, Jim Henson or any other icons of my past that are no longer going concerns. And hopefully he has enough money that he could retire comfortably, traveling and putting on his stage show when he wants to.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d For some reason, I'm not surprised to hear this. I recall putting forth the idea a while back that the good Doctor's corporate self, Talonian, was attempting to amass funds and circle his financial wagons for a potential retirement in the near future. At the time, I agreed with Boris that it would be stupid to walk away from such a great job. But perhaps my idea wasn't that far off. We'll have to wait and see. Meanwhile. if Cap'n Wayne can find a way to fill the void, he might find it a potentially lucrative opportunity- and a good pirate never overlooks a target of opportunity. Arrr!
--- fm123 I heard rumors that Dr. D. may be retiring after the end of 2007.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d I heard rumors that Dr. D. may be retiring after the end of 2007. So here is your big break Capt. Wayne!
--- workjobb Captain Wayne is doing a much better show than the doctor is these days. Of course, you could find out for yourself by spending $15 a month to listen to a one time stream of each week's show and access to archives that omit years and years worth of shows, and also deal with the lackey that runs his site. I canceled my subscription in the second month, right after I had paid for that month, and the "free" shows delivered by e-mail was immediately terminated. "Free" shows, my ass-that's what you're paying for. There are no other benefits to speak of. I consider the whole concept a slap in the face to his fanbase, many of whom have supported him for years. Do yourself a favor-stay right here at the Mad Music Archives, download all of Captain Wayne's shows, and load up your MP3 player. This is all you need.

Welcome to the site. I'm sorry the doctor isn't playing in your area. However, if you haven't already done so, download a few of Wayne's shows and I'm sure you will be impressed.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d I used to listen to the Doctor on a station in Philadelphia, but I can't remember the call letters and this was in 1975 so I doubt it helps you much at this late date.
--- fm123 According to the Dr. Demento Radio Log, there are no radio stations in or around Delaware that broadcast the Dr. D. show.
