My computer has started jerking: holding everything in one place twice every second. The picture, the MIDI, and even the PCM audio.

In Task Manager, it shows the total CPU usage is at least 15%, which is not from the active processes alone. For example, when I look at the processes active, except "System Idle Process", it might add up to 3% but the total CPU usage might show 21%.

We once had this problem a couple years ago when we first got the computer, and Dell couldn't help us with it. However, the problem fixed itself in some unknown way. And here it is again, only this time it poses a threat to my MIDI sequencing.

Has this ever happened to you? Do you know how to fix it?

I have been having similar problems. It has prevented me from recording any media, from video, vinyl, or live.

I recently reformatted and reinstalled my system and everything was fine. Of course, Windows XP wants to download all the updates, which I allowed. However, once it reached upgrading back to Media Player version 11, the old problem was back. Your problem may be related to the media player as well.

My solution was to pull together my collection of spare parts and build another computer, to be used only for multi media production. I'm not sure if it will be a total solution to my problem, because I'm still assembling it.
