fiogf49gjkf0d Of course, the reason why it took them so long to accomplish it was the fact that the techies working on the new monitors were, in fact, working mere inches from their monitors.... so management had to keep hiring new techies to take over as the old ones dropped dead from exposure.
Tim P. Ryan: --- The tech also probably improved, possibly pushed by the fact of so many people working inches away from a CRT, that the CRT terminal/monitor was improved.
fiogf49gjkf0d I was thinking that could also be the reason. I think they managed a way to shield that flyback transformer so it wouldn't emit any sound. Don't have to worry about that anymore with LCD and plasma displays.

fm123: --- That's interesting you mention that high-frequency sound. The flyback transformer ocsillates at 15,734 Hz. Until I was around 21 years old, it use to bother me. Now, I cannot hear it at all. I guess my hearing range seems to cut off just below that, at 15Khz.

The 22" monitor that I was referring to is for my PC. I don't have a TV in this room, but I can use this monitor for a TV if I install a PCI tuner card.

fiogf49gjkf0d And my mommy would yell at me for being to close to the 21 inch Mad Man Muntz TV, or later the 19" portable to watch TV, while now I have a 19" inch (Edison aspect ratio) monitor that I am less that a foot away from. Actually, the harm from old CRTs and old TV's was found not be so much visual, but from being to close to the high voltage fly-back transformer that was putting out a high-frequency piercing sound that was wrecking havoc on ears.
To replace my 31" inch 1999 TV, I would need near a 42" wide-screen HDTV to get the same height of picture. However a 37" is about the width that would fit in the current space if the new set sides are not consumed with a wide border or speakers. Pocket book might dicate I settle for 32".
fm123™: --- My monitor that I am using right now is a 22" wide-screen. I sit about 2-3 feet away from it. The one nice thing about LCD's vs CRT's is you don't have to worry about radiation from the tube.
fiogf49gjkf0d Being a cheap bastard, I considered just 1 sizable LCD screen for both jobs, then realized there would be a resolution problem. Price rises exponentially with size & resolution, so I settled for this. Besides, you can't watch TV and eat dinner off a TV tray if the set's 2 feet in front of you like the screen I'm looking at is.

fiogf49gjkf0d My monitor that I am using right now is a 22" wide-screen. This is the largest size that will fit within my hutch on top of the desk. It was a tight squeeze to get it in, but it fits like a glove.
I sit about 2-3 feet away from it. The one nice thing about LCD's vs CRT's is you don't have to worry about radiation from the tube.

fiogf49gjkf0d That's a rather personal question...oh, have we started again?
The ancient stereo contraption sits in a part of the living room with limited space and it had to fit between the giant crumbling speakers, so it couldn't be any more than 40. Since I sit 6 feet away on a swivel chair and face in the direction of this computer most of the time, it needn't have been any bigger even if I did have room.
fm123™: --- How many inches is your set?
Stavro Arrgolus: --- If you buy a flat-panel like the one I got. The penguin would fall off and roll down the back of the telly-vision set. Even if it looked fairly butch.
fiogf49gjkf0d Ummmm, I hadn't thought of that.

fiogf49gjkf0d Do I have to take the penguin off my telly then?
fm123™: --- I think they are going to go ahead with the original plans and switch over to digital TV on Feb. 17th. They were trying to delay it until June 12th, but it didn't pass in the house - www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=14088

If you don't have the right setup after Feb. 17th, you'll be seeing something like on the above TV.
Imagine watching this animated aardvark all day and night, you'll get pretty dizzy after a while!

fiogf49gjkf0d Well Windows 7 beta has been out for nearly a month, so give it time and the testing will be done this year before the final release goes out.
Don't think they will make the same mistakes as they did with Vista. It should be good enough to run even before any new service packs come out.
Some good information here - wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7.
fiogf49gjkf0d Hopefully, both I and the machine will last one more year. But will Windows 7 be ok or should we wait for SP1 where all its bugs get fixed?
fiogf49gjkf0d If you can hang in there just one more year, you will see the price of SSDs cut right in half. That's when I plan on building my "Silent PC". I will start a blog here just before I do it, and explain step by step how to put one together from selected parts that I feel will last at least 10 years.
As far as Vista goes, skip it. I will most likely go with Windows 7. Hey, it's 64-bit, and I think that will be a BIG improvement from a 32-bit O/S.

fiogf49gjkf0d We cheap bastards get every last penny out of the crap we buy. My LTD was bought around the time of that TV and it still runs- well, not really. The battery is dead and the driveway is deep in 'ice storm', so it's not going anywhere soon. Things have to fall apart before they get replaced around here.
This computer's about to go. I may not have until they start selling affordable SSDs. I may have to get a box downgraded to XP. Won't use Vista.

fiogf49gjkf0d Oh, good for you Stavro! Glad to see that you are "digital ready". They claim that there are 6.5 million households that will NOT be ready. You noticed that they wanted to do this switch over a couple of weeks right after the Superbowl? It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
fiogf49gjkf0d After 13 years, the old 10 ton set gave out and after smashing the top of the cheapo plastic cabinet (I take no crap from inanimate objects- those 'varks listen) I gave up and got a new HDTV. Should be ok. Local station makes a fuss about digital readiness and broadcasts regular 'tests' telling you if your set is ready for digital.

fiogf49gjkf0d Time to pull out the Red Dwarf DVDs again... Haven't had time to watch them in a long time.
fiogf49gjkf0d No, of course not. This was a good episode. Lister gets drunk and plays pool with planets. And the toaster is hilarious.
fiogf49gjkf0d Sorry never saw this show.
Stavro Arrgolus: --- RIMMER: A white hole? KRYTEN: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. A black hole sucks time and matter out of the universe; a white hole returns it. LISTER: So that thing's spewing time back into the universe?

fiogf49gjkf0d Everything finds its way into Uranus these days- www.themadmusicarchive.com/song_details.aspx?SongID=33740 It's just too popular a place.
fm123: --- I do believe that the universe is expanding into Uranus.
Stavro Arrgolus: --- If the universe is everything and scientists say that the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into?

fiogf49gjkf0d Why do we park in the driveway but drive on the parkway?
Stavro Arrgolus: --- It's not the size of your asphalt aardvark, it's what you do with it that counts. It's also how much 'available tar' comes out of one when you squeeze it. And how far it goes. I have trouble keeping it from shooting out into the road when the driveway needs fixing...
fm123: --- Hey look, my Aardvark is larger than yours!
fiogf49gjkf0d I thought that's what happened when you didn't use it. Or is it your rubber hamsters that turn blue?
fm123: --- My asphalt aardvark gets so much use, that's why it turned blue.

fiogf49gjkf0d Thanks. btw the music file is completely separate from the banner file, so Wayne will be happy, but no longer in sync with the banner.
Mute this music then check out ----> www.themadmusicarchive.com/readblog.aspx?id=2153
fm123: --- Very nice banner, Dave. The mute button had started me thinking about those Steven Wright one liners.

fiogf49gjkf0d Hey look, my Aardvark is larger than yours!
Very nice banner, Dave. The mute button had started me thinking about those Steven Wright one liners.
Then I drove my building onto the middle of a highway, and I ran outside, and told all of the cars to get the hell out of my driveway.
fiogf49gjkf0d Sorry I missed the joke "nothing NEW happened" I get it now. : )
So how do you guys like the banner?
fm123: --- That was meant to be a one liner similar to what Steven Wright did, right?
Dave AuJus: --- The button just worked for me.
Thanks fm123

fiogf49gjkf0d "I put the key to my car in the house and the building started up. So I drove it around for a while. A cop stopped me and said, "Where do you live?" I said, "Right here." I should add those Steven Wright bits someday...

fiogf49gjkf0d That's to be expected. When you accidentally put the car key in the door to your house, does the building start up?
fm123: --- I tried clicking on the button, but nothing new happened.

fiogf49gjkf0d Now that's clever, a mute button!
That reminds me of this one liner from Steven Wright:
"Last night I played a blank tape at full blast. The mime next door went nuts."
I tried clicking on the button, but nothing new happened.
