Facts:
  • Actual title: "(Theme From) The Monkees." The album version has 3 verses and 2 choruses, whereas the TV version has 1 verse and 3 choruses (the third one ending with "We may be comin' to your town!"). (AH3RD)
  • Ray Stevens recorded a bizarre and crazy remake of this song, turning "The Monkees" into German singers named "Wolfgang and Fritzi!" Ray's version is on his 1984 album HE THINKS HE'S RAY STEVENS. (sav-man)
  • The Italian version of The Monkees' theme ("Tema Dei Monkees") cited above was released on a 1982 Rhino picture disc called MONKEE BUSINESS. (sav-man)
  • Most overseas TV stations would air "The Monkees" episodes in their original form, with subtitles appearing on the screen which translated the English into this-or-that country's native language. However, there was a law in Italy which said that all TV shows in that country had to be presented in Italian! Thus, another version of this song was cut, with poor Micky attempting to sing the lyrics in Italian! (sav-man)
  • The theme song to "The Monkees" TV show. Can also be found on their debut album (entitled simply THE MONKEES). (sav-man)
  • Song Lyrics:
    Here we come,
    Walking down the street,
We get the funniest looks from
    Everyone we meet.
    Hey, hey, we're the Monkees,
And people say we monkey around,
    But we're too busy singing
    To put anybody down.
We go wherever we want to,
Do what we like to do,
We don't have time to get restless,
    There's always something new.
    Hey, hey, we're the Monkees,
And people say we monkey around,
    But we're too busy singing
    To put anybody down.
We're just trying to be friendly,
Come and watch us sing and play,
    We're the young generation
And we've got something to say.
    Oh...
    Anytime,
    Or anywhere,
    Just look over your shoulder,
    Guess who'll be standing there.
    Hey, hey, we're the Monkees,
And people say we monkey around,
    But we're too busy singing
    To put anybody down.
