About time I answered this. Was doing other things...my brain hurts...
Just to be anal, on music sites, I consistently use "Stavro" for a username, so on Pandora, I'm "Stavro Arrgolus" (The same name I used when writing artist page descriptions of Python and George Carlin on this site, for those who actually noticed). I stopped using the "288" some time ago for new registering.

My Monty Python station has hit a snag since a search found that they have no Python albums. The Python songs they play come from compilations. Limits the channel's potential quite a bit. I'm determined to make a good 'demented' station, though.
They do have other artists...Steven Lynch, Steve Goodman, Loudon Wainwright III, Jonathan Coulton....I'll work it out and build a good one.

It's a longshot, but it might be possible to get Tim Westergren to consider a 'novelty' category of some kind- assuming DT hasn't already tried when he set up their links on his site.

>What is your user name on pandora.com? I can listen to YOUR station.

If you want mine, I can post that too. I have about sixteen stations.

If you're being blocked from pandora.com, then what you need to do is access that site through a web proxy server based in the USA. Here's how to do it - www.armyproxy.com/

That even works in Canada.... and Pandora isn't the only one affected. I've noticed that at a number of places where I've gone in search of music.

Being from outside The U.S. it doesn't work for me, I get this message.

"Dear Pandora Visitor,

We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative. "

I've been listening to Pandora for almost two years now and one of the first stations I created was They Might Be Giants.
Good Stuff!

Hey, send pandora.com and email with your idea of a Mad Music station. They read their emails and may consider tweaking their formula.

>Today...well at 3am...I managed to create a Monty Python station on Pandora for the first time. They really are expanding their musical horizons. It plays Steven Lynch and Richard Cheese and actual Python tunes. And lots of mundane crap. They still don't grasp the whole 'dementia' concept. With a little effort and a lot of time (which I seem to have), I can whip the new channel into something fun (or even funny) to listen to. <

>It still doesn't grasp the concept of "demented music", but it works for most everything else. I've created about 9 stations on it with different genres I like and it'll often be what I'm listening to while editing here when I'm not playing one of our shows. It's even managed to make me hate today's (somewhat) mainstream music a little less. Quite a feat, indeed.
Pandora still seems oblivious to any and all of our artists for some reason. Go figure.>

Thanks a lot.

I created three feeds from Pandora.

Classic Rock
DFSX Comedy LD2
House of DFSX LD3

LD = Low Definition (a takeoff on HD radio channel IDs)

97 more to come?

I have a Zappa station too and that's what I wanted out of it as well. It takes quite a while to get a station the way you want. They only give you 6 'skips' or 'thumbs down' per hour per station and there will be a lot of crap in the mix until you fine tune it just right (and even then), but when you do, it makes for good listening when you're doing something else.
I've found the process goes faster if you set up multiple stations and switch between them when you run out of 'skips'. I just kept at it and I've managed to get some of them sounding real nice.

I had some bad luck creating my Frank Zappa station. The first song was was a long instrumental from Shut Up and Play Your Guitar. I clicked "I like it" even though my favorite Zappa songs are the the ones with great vocals and demented lyrics, and the jazz/classical/avant-garde ensemble pieces.

So then the station kept serving up lots of boring rock guitar solos before offering up any more Zappa.

I played with it for about 20 minutes. A good time waster. If I had a computer at work it would be nice to listen all day, just to see what it would come up with.

Automatic Pilot also plays lots of Dresden Dolls. I sent them my CDs last February, and we were on by April.

Art (and all demented artists): I'd recommend sending just one a first, and choose it very carefully. They seem to be impressed by professional-looking packaging and they like UPC bars. Musically it should be of the highest production values and with a lot of variety. Include copies of a couple of reviews and such They promise they WILL listen to it, but they don't take everything.

I got the Chipmunks right away but it didn't have The Rutles but maybe I spell it wrong.

I think the angle is it is a radio station that plays music similar to the style of the artist you like so indie acts that sound similar might get some airplay or royalties.

But it also steers you to mainstream acts so if you don't want to hear alot of mainstream acts you have to the blow it up button.

I think it's a clever way for major records to see how there music stands up to people that don't always listen to mainstream music.

Pandora uses Al's early work and doesn't really "grok" that he's a parodist and not coming up with (Most of) the musical styles himself.

So, it's finding stuff like early-80's pop for Al...

Wow! I stumped the expert. Oh well. Just look it up and play with it.

I think it is one of those things that some will say is fantastic and a breakthrough and others will sigh and say ho hum.

I am amused by it. It is new and has many quirks to work out of the system.

I am fascinated (read:easily immused) with this pandora.com. I have never heard of it before and I like it. They don't seem to compare subject matter (like parodies, etc.) but it seems to do well with musical styles. I did, however, put in Stephen Lynch and the criteria it looked for for similar artists was something like "objectionable or vulger lyrics." They also seem to be current on their music, too.

I tried pandora. I put in Al and it then gave me a bunch of songs that where nothing like Al. After I click I don't like this song for a few hours without laughing once I quit trying.

I've been using Pandora for quite a while. Great site and if you don't like the song click the "I don't like this song button" and they will never play it again. If you put in They Might Be Giants you get a lot of songs... by They Might Be Giants. (Weird. Especially since they are supposed to be playing songs by groups *like* the group or artist you enter. Anyway, it's all free and you can make your own stations and listen 'til your ears fall off.
