this is from the only christmas episode the monkees did. it guest starred butch (eddie munster) patrick as a spoiled brat who learns the true meaning of christmas thanks to the pre-fab four. at the end of the show the monkees sang RIU CHIU, a 16th century spanish christmas carol. it shows they really did gel as a vocal group even if their musicianship was under attack. then during the credits the monkeemania continues. i was going to post this christmas eve,but i thought a lot of people might not be around. so 4 days early isn't pushing it too much! merry christmas! these are the full lyrics translated into english. i think the monkees edited out a couple of verses.... Riu, riu, chiu (nightingale's sounds) The river bank protects it, As God kept the wolf from our lamb. The rabid wolf tried to bite her, But God Almighty knew how to defend her, He wished to create her impervious to sin, Nor was this maid to embody original sin. Riu, riu, chiu, etc. The newborn child is the mightiest monarch, Christ patriarchal invested with flesh. He made himself small and so redeemed us: He who was infinite became finite. Riu, riu, chiu, etc. Many prophecies told of his coming, And now in our days have we seen them fulfilled. God became man, on earth we behold him, And see man in heaven because he so willed. Riu, riu, chiu, etc. A thousand singing herons I saw passing, Flying overhead, sounding a thousand voices, Exhulting, "Glory be in the heavens, and peace on Earth, for Jesus has been born." Riu, riu, chiu, etc. He comes to give life to the dead, He comes to redeem the fall of man; This child is the light of day, He is the very lamb Saint John prophecied. Riu, riu, chiu, etc. Now we have gotten what we were all desiring, Go we together to bear him gifts: Let each give his will to the God who was willing To come down to Earth man’s equal to be. Riu, riu, chiu, etc.

after posting that clip from "the farmer's daughter" with davy jones, i got nostalgic for the monkees. so i dug around some more, and of course found lots of clips from their t.v. show. but there's also a lot of other monkee related material that's pretty interesting. not all of it is demented or mad,but hearing the monkees always takes me back to marion drive in the 1960's: being 5 years old, playing hide and seek, and listening to "last train to clarkesville" endlessly. this is the song that started this whole thing. the monkees were never seen lip synching this song on the show. some things you just cant recreate. it must've been a "smokey" day in the recording studio when they did this one.... this is one of my favorite michael nesmith songs. done here by jackie jae and jason cowsill... ok, so far that's mickey, davy and mike. anyone care for some peter?... :oP speaking of mickey, davy and mike... this is from glen campbell's goodtime hour in 1969. this was pretty much the monkees' "let it be" era. i think not long after this mike split (peter had already left obviously),and for a while davey and mickey were a monkees duo. check out mickey's bad lip synching in this video. it's pretty clear he didn't care. he was just having fun mugging for the camera. these guys call themselves "nesmith tribute". they're pretty good. they also go by "monkees tribute" and play stuff by davy and mickey as well. this is another mike favorite of mine... from the monkees swan song,HEAD... in this video the guys switch postions: mickey lead sings with tamborine, mike on bass, peter on guitar and davy on drums. mike nesmith hates this song. i like the album version better, but this video has an interesting gimmick. how about some more peter...the demented side this time! a nice little tribute by someone called infusion26 (credit where credit is due!) punk monkees!!....hmmm, punkees? davy made it a hit, but he couldn't have done it without these guys... one of davy's countless fans put this together using one of my favorite songs of his.... orbitdeathrants (thats his name!) made this video from the monkees' song ZOR AND ZAM.... you may want to change into a tie dyed tee shirt for this one... the monkees were one of if not the first pop bands to use the new moog synthesizer on this song...
