I've found that making a phone request is a good way to get it into The Capn's Treasure Chest segment! Happy Birthday, welcome to the Fart Club!

A quick update - I sent a short note of appreciation over to the Old Codge at his WFMU e-mail address, and received a response from the previously-mentioned Irwin Chusid. So, while The Codge" may be a somewhat enigmatic character (and should remain so), it's probably safe to assume that Mr. Chusid is acting in the role of caretaker to the old boy.

Yea, I caught the new show, pretty funny/weird/obscure stuff. But still no idea as to who he might be, eh? I figured that being as he was broadcasting from a New Jersey radio station, one of you Jersey guys might know something about him.

The "Codg" plays a lot of old calypso and Raymond Scott music, as does one of their other sometimes-DJ's, Irwin Chusid. There are several other parallels as well, making me wonder if they're not one-and-the-same guy?

I'm just trying to learn a little about the real guy, not eviscerate the charm from his on-air persona. Whoever he is, he's funny, and to any enthusiast of unconventional music, worth a listen.

WFMU plays lots of music that is unavailable most places. For example, Tony Coulter played Automatic Pilot on at least two of his WFMU shows without any prompting from me (or to my knowledge anyone else) - he discovered us on his own! Most shows broadcast over the last 7 years or so are available for listening in their entirety, mostly with realaudio.

Yes, I enjoy listening to "The Old Codger"'s shows too. I got a good number of CD-Rs of his shows that have been put to mp3 format. He has been doing the show since 1990, so I would guess it is someone playing the part. But don't let that destroy the enjoyment of listening to him. It makes for fun radio.

Now I gotta check and see if something new has come out.
Okay, I checked The Old Codger's playlists at WFMU and found the last show to listen to as an mp3 is June 24, 2007.

For those not familiar, The Old Codger likes old records, but not that Big Band pap. He recommends cleaning your Tommy Dorsey records with turpentine and brillo pads.

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here by asking about the host of another podcast, but I figure that considering all that's been written here about Dr. Demento, perhaps I could squeeze in a question about one of my other favorite internet DJ's, "The Old Codger"

I've already Googled his name, and most of the references come back to (not surprisingly) WFMU. But what's REALLY going on over there? Is his name really Courtney T. Edison, or is that a stage name (or whatever the equivalent is for DJ's)? Is he really at war with the station management, and "David Numengarden" in particular? Or is HE in fact, a station manager?

He says he's got 51,000 78 RPM records, which would seem to rival even the legendary Dr. Demento. Surely, anybody with a collection that large can't be unknown to the record-collecting community.

I know there are a lot of "true believers" in old and/or novelty music and it's supporters on this site. I hope somebody can give me a little inside information about this guy...
