It might be nice to be able to see who has recently viewed my "MadSpace" profile page.

You can add "favour" to the dictionary on Firefox, then the next time you type it in, it will be the correct spelling.

EDIT: I don't think there's an option to remove a word. That would be a nice feature to add to the next version of Firefox. Be sure to suggest that to them on their forum.

But Firefox doesn't satisfy your second paragraph. It still catches my correct spelling of "favour".

A built-in spell checker to correct such simple spelling errors such as:
"doohicky" should be spelled "doohickey".

Also, if you are NOT in the USA, then the word "favor" should be automatically corrected to "favour".

If it cannot be done, just download Firefox. It has a very good built-in spell checker. I'm sure you'll agree.

I think a doohicky on the front page telling the upcoming show topics would be spiffy as a freshly laundered Cat.

May I suggest that the "Next" and "Previous" buttons near the top of each page could be bigger and hence easier to push with your curser...?

(Okay, I admit it...I need a new mouse...)

Sick Pupy & MarlinsGirl,

Yeah, it looks like I need to rework the events-adding page a lot (multiple artists per event, and multiple events per artist). I'll devote some time to it as soon as I can.

For entering Upcoming Events:

It would be nice to be able to enter a list of dates and locations, so we don't have to individually enter each date on an artist's tour.

knowing that would require a huge amount of extra programming.....

It would be nice to be able to select the artist by their name or the first few letters in their name. (Like it's currently done for the artists' pages.) It's currently only the first letter, and that brings up a potentially huge list to navigate through.

All of the Automatic Pilot songs are now listed on the pages by year recorded (from 1981 to 1985). This comes from the "Released" field on each song page.

However, the two Automatic Pilot albums containing the above songs are no longer on the 2005 page event thiough both album pages show the 2005 release date.

I guess this goes back to the date recorded / date released debate, and touches upon the "singles released" can of worms (even though Automatic Pilot never released any singles).

Thanks, I've been going further back, currently at 1951.

Update: We got songs listed for most every year going back to 1903. We gotta find at least one for 1917.

I went year by year back to 1963, could not get to 1962. Does each year totally fill in by itself, or is there a query/template per year?

The crew (members) have done a great job at identifing year or date of release, I was surprised at how many songs were listed in each year.

It would be helpful. There's been more activity there than in times past. If the site is to have even more people filling out pages soon, being able to find and recheck finished or unfinished pages will become even more important and more capacity on that page would be useful. Finding your efforts scrolled off the end because of limited pagination is always a minor annoyance. Yes, I think 400 would do nicely. But even just doubling the capacity would be a big help.
...And the aforementioned separate album listings page would be a big help for those who fill out album pages and those who just want to find an album quickly.

>It's currently the last 100 songs - Are you asking for the 400 most recent changes?

If a song is available in the MP3 store, you should automatically put a purchase link to the MP3 store under "Where To Buy" or else move the Purchase this song at 192k for only: 99¢ down to the "Where To Buy" section.

It would be nice if you brought back quoting in these posts so if the person didn't mind we could quote them to respond to what they say.

maybe you could have a way to turn on or off the quote ability base on who ever starts the post.

It's not that easy to removed dates and add them to the song fact section. I have 100s of songs I already dated as when they were recorded.

And that is what it originally said: "year of recording".

You can add a thing that saids year of release but it is really wrong to take something that says year of recording and change it without asking other members because then you make them redo work they have already done.

I really don't respect people running websites that way because any future archiving I do might have to be changed again because people decide things base on what is easy for them instead of what works good for everyone.

Another problem with year of release is I didn't keep tract of them but if I did
I'm sure this would fit better in the fact section because I would want to put year of release on casette tape, year of release on CD, year of release on record, year of release on mp3.

So it is my arguement that one date for when it was recorded is better then one date for when it was released.

And the official release of a song is hard to say because I prerelease some of my material before the CD comes out.

It would be nice if instead of just a release date or a reording date you could choose what it was.

I put on all my songs the recording date because it said what was the recording date and now it has been changed to the release date so now all my songs have the wrong date.

When email is sent from the MMA routine, send copy to sender, so they can keep a copy of what they said.

Members database history should remember one-click requests and keep the thank you note on the song page when visted for the next x amount of days (say, like 30).

As a variation of the same idea, perhaps artists who are also members can have a calendar added to their MadSpace page.

I realize some artists are already posting tour info in the forum. But this could be a specific list where we could easily look for the tour/concert info we want.

Of course, what really helps is if somebody actually adds concert info into the list we already have. As of right now, there's only one date listed..... And, sadly, it's nowhere near where I live.

I think it would be cool to have a list produced when you click on the categories at the top of the Friends section in the Color Key. You know, click on Artists and a list of all the artists that are members is generated. Or click on Old-Timers and a list of all the Old-Timers is generated.
Is that feasible?

Now that there are more than 2 years worth of The Mad Music Show, it would be nice if it were organized the way the Dr Demento listings are. The same is true of Manic Mondays and Freakin Funny Music, and presumably, of MMDT20 and KMCC down the road.

Well, I guess it sort of is, already, if you get there via the Shows instead of the Features link. I was thinking maybe the Features page should go to something like the Shows page, pre-filtered for the current year and by the selected Feature show.

When displaying a list of forum topics or a topic thread, it would be nice to be able to limit the amount of data that the server sends back to the client, by one of the following methods:

(a) When sorted by newest first (the default choice, and I imagine the most common), be able to specify ONLY those topics update / posts added within the past x days (or hours)

(b) A limit on number of topics / posts returned (with a possible "next" button)

(c) A limit on number of characters returned (with a possible "next" button)

When I was on vacation and did not have access to a computer, I frequently checked the site on my cell phone (following the progress of the Halloween song contest) and racked up the bill for international roaming kilobytes. A lot of this was for re-downloading old information, even though I had configured my browser as text only, i.e. no images.

The ability to download only new information would save a lot of bandwidth in this situation, and possibly lighten the load on the server as well.

I think those who wish to donate would be better to do so "behind the scenes" rather than with pay links and adverts all over the site.

Keep in mind that if the site goes "commercial", then the Music And Film Industry Associations (MAFIA) will demand a huge cut to fill their greedy pockets. Wayne gets by right now paying the minimum royalties to BMI/ASCAP.

One thing that makes this such a great and user friendly website is that Wayne acts on bug reports. Before this current incarnation was made public, Wayne recruited a small army of beta testers who were brutal in their approach to finding bugs and compatibility issues. I'm sure he will seek to profit from past success and once again recruit diligent beta testers to scrutinize every page he creates. So if a compatibility issue does come up, I'm sure somebody will catch it and let Wayne know before it becomes a huge issue.

Sometimes I wonder what Wayne enjoys more.... demented music or programming. (Note to Wayne.... You don't have to make a choice.)

If you're going to use .NET, please make sure the pages are more-than-IE compatible. Microsoft has a nasty habit of making sure pages can't be viewed on competing browsers, even if your intent is to be universal. :(

It'd be nice to have it be friendly to Safari and Opera and any others with two or more people using them, but there needs to be limits (and people to test them out -- my guess is you don't have a Mac to test the site with Safari).

And now that you've updated the site to .net 2.0 you can turn right around and update it to .net 3 which has been released. Won't that be fun!

I'm finishing up porting the site over to the .NET Framework 2.0
---------

If you're going to use .NET, please make sure the pages are more-than-IE compatible. Microsoft has a nasty habit of making sure pages can't be viewed on competing browsers, even if your intent is to be universal. :(

That said, I third the Top Purchases chart, but make it a weekly thing. That way, if someone decided to,* they could compile a catch-all weekly chart of dementia! :) Sort of like a "Hot 100"-type chart for funny music that counts sales, and airplay figures from multiple sources.

*(yes, I would love to compile and air such a chart on a weekly basis *heh*)

There could be a section for reviews of gigs/performances, songs and CD's of artists played on the Mad Music Shows in the Mad Music Journal.

The thread on The Old Codger has reminded me of my idea that I gave to Wayne before of a

Mad Music Journal.

A magazine looking format where articles can be contributed by members and indexed by it's editors for items like an article on The Old Codger, or a place for demento/dementia memoribilia (like a scan of a 1974 music guide from a station that put Dr. D on the cover.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas! Keep 'em coming!

I'm finishing up porting the site over to the .NET Framework 2.0 (and Visual Studio 2005) and hope to deploy that on Tuesday. Note that there may be bugs! A lot changed in .NET 2.0. But, it gave me something to do in the hotel last week when there was crappy internet access.

From there I can begin folding-in a lot of your suggestions (as soon as I do some database fix-ups - they're not layed out very well right now). As a resuly the site may be somewhat unstable as I fix things up, add error traps, etc. The big thing is when I'm done you should not see any of those "SERVER ERROR" pages - instead it'll shoot me an e-mail then gracefull exit. That way I'll have a record of every error and the full debug dump.

I'll also be doing a LOT of behind-the-scenes work trying to do a more professional job for the next version.

I'll keep you posted!

This has been discussed on another thread, but bears repeating here: Non-members should be able to purchase mp3s (at least using PayPal which already authenticates every customer).

I totally agree with this.

Multiple dates and locations would be good if you want to put in the Artist's entire tour. You would only have to put the artist in once and then put in the different dates and locations.

--- karlap
For events: multiple dates in one location for a given event. Multiple locations would also be good.

On the main page where the 5 CD album covers are located, you should use smaller size thumbnails. Sometimes it takes way too long for the page to load, besides using lots of bandwidth.

I second the mp3 store top 10 listing.

Also, the ability to play the previews in the web browser instead of having it open it in something would be nice.

A link exchange page for members to list their website(s). Have a link checker built-in to make sure a reciprocal link has been placed to prevent spammers. This will bring many new visitors into TMMA.

A Top 10 listing for the mp3 store. Rank by total purchases within the last 60 or 90 days. For singles and albums.

The title of each thread should be displayed at the top of the browser pages rather than showing "TheMadMusicArchive - Topic Thread". This way, the search engines will pick up the forum topics better. This will further help on the overall site rankings and drive more visitors to the site.

There are many other SEO things that can be done too. Instead using of "ArtistID=" you should have the actual name of the artist in the URL. This will help visitors who are searching for a particular artist find exactly what they are looking for via Google.

Maybe a cool feature for members would be MadMail. This would be a free e-mail account like HotMail. For instance, my MadMail address would be fm123@themadmusicarchive.com. Just make sure it's equipped with a spam filter.

When entering URLs without the www such as example.com it doesn't hyperlink like with www.example.com . Also, URLs with a tilde (~) won't fully hyperlink such as www.example.com/~example/

Improved search engine - wildcards, soundex searches, non-consecutive words, and/or capability.

Add keywords to songs/artist/albums

Add styles to songs (narritive, dialog, skit, rock, etc.)

I'm in the planning stages for the next version of the website (to be released sometime in 2008). This will include a database redesign to add capability, Web 2.0 stuff, a lighter/cleaner/more modern look, etc.

What features would you like added?
What needs to be made easier/simpler/faster?
What is the current site's strengths/weaknesses?
Should we add support for mobil devices (phones/PDAs)?

Please try to look not just from just your view, but from a new visitor's point of view.

Thanks!

(P.S. I will be keeping this thread clean-up for clarity - I may delete posts or edit them as newer, better-defined ones on the same idea are added.)
