Okay.... That's what I get for believing everything I read online. I pulled out my record catalogues and at least know where the story might have come from.

Gary S Paxton was under contract with the "Brent" label as a duo named Skip And Flip. Paxton was "Flip", thus the name on Alley Oop's label. They continued to record for "Brent" up to 1962 and released one more record as Skip And Flip in 1963 on the "California" label.

Alley Oop was released in 1960 on the "Lute" label.

There was a group called The Argyles on the "Brent" label in 1959, but whether or not this was Gary S Paxton is not clear to me.

What I said about hiding from "Brent" is mentioned on Wikipedia:

he couldn't have hidden very well with his name on the lable as the one who arranged the song! maybe the (flip) was supposed to through everyone off.

The singer of Alley Oop is Actually Gary S. Paxton. (Don't forget the "S", it's one third of my whole name.) The "Hollywood Argyles" was apparently a name he used to hide from a label he was already under contract to.

Gary S Paxton is also the writer and producer of Bobby Pickett's hit, "The Monster Mash".

Since his conversion to Christianity in the early 70s, his focus has been on Gospel and Contemporary Christian music. Some of his Christian songs are definitely demented enough to be appreciated here.

Sometimes, when a pirate captain goes off on a raiding party and acquires some booty, it might be mis-labeled. I think that may have happened in this case.

Ok, the version played on the show has to be Ray Stevens, cause I found this
www.oldiesmuseum.com/033omAlleyOop.mp3
via altavista and it sounds like the old version I had before my CD's were stolen.

Ok, this has been bugging me since Episode 89,
the singer of Alley Oop sounds like Ray Stevens,
is the version from the show a cover by Ray, or was he the singer of the original song, or was it his version (I think he has a version)
cause it is driving me nuts.
