A 'That sounds WAY familiar' with the before and after would be interesting.

However, I'm not sure if it is just not cricket to play an artist more than 3 times in a podcast presentation.

The Weird Al topic sounds like a great idea. But instead of having an entire show of just Weird Al songs, it should also include other artists' covers and/or parodies of Weird Al songs and/or parodies.

Weird Al's "Headline News" is a parody of Crash Test Dummies' "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm". I've also parodied that song (in true filker fashion) to cover episodes of The Twilight Zone. I have part one completed already and intend to continue writing and rerecording until I've (someday) filked the entire series... three episodes at a time.

Maybe you can do a Elvis MMS for us?

I would love too but I don't really understand internet radio well enough nor do I think I have the equipment.

If my friend greg from www.InYourFaceRadio.net would help me do it I could but at the moment he's not responding to my myspace messages.

"I don't recall Weird Al being a theme on the show before. Is it because we have all his albums and have heard all his songs a few zillion times? Am I only assuming that all of us have such a collection? If so, then maybe it's time for a Weird Al theme show. Call it "The Pirates of Polkaholism" or something."

I think a Mad Musics Most requested Weird Al show would be great !

Or I would love to hear a Weird Al rarity show.

How about a show consisting of all humorous instrumental music, or vocal music with no lyrics? Some great sonic dementia artists of the past that come to mind are:

Ferrante & Teicher's Blast Off album with the Chopstick Cha Cha
www.ferranteandteicher.com/

Jean Jacques Perrey & Dana Countryman- Harry's Rag
www.jeanjacquesperrey.com/

Andre Popp- esp. Beer Barrell Polka, or Perles de Cristal
www.spaceagepop.com/popp.htm

Yma Sumac's- Gopher Mambo
www.yma-sumac.com/

Esquival
www.spaceagepop.com/esquivel.htm

And of course if there are any contemporary artists doing well-produced comedic lunatic sound scapes, that would be great too. I just don't have any that come to mind at the moment.

I do, too. The original version of 'Yoda', School Cafeteria, stuff everyone has. If there is a Weird Al show, it'd be nice to hear all the rarities. And maybe afterward lean toward the stuff he writes himself rather than just his parodies. It's been years since I could recognize what he's having a go at. I'll bet he has to do a little research as well.

It wasn't that bad.

We had a gentleman here in my home town who was disliked by one and all, someone came up with the idea of an "I Abhor Nicolas Club", but it fell flat when only a few people turned up.
All that attended the first meeting were four Nick haters.

Alex.

I think I have come up with the worlds worst pun.

Did you know that the distortion pedal for guitars was first thought of in ancient Chinese philosophy? Certainly you have heard of the "I-Ching Wah-Wah"

Told you it was bad.

Episode number 4 was dedicated to Double Entendre. However, I can think of at least one song that was written since then. "A Pirates Love Song" by me. Benny Bell also did some of my favorite puns, or double entrendre songs.

I also have an idea for a show, but I'm not sure if there is enough songs for an entire show. Fowl Music, Music featuring the most demented creatures in the animal kingdom, namely Chickens, Turkeys & Ducks.

Songs could include
Disco Duck--Rick Dees
I Want a New Duck--Wierd Al
In the Mood--Ray Stevens
Robot Chicken Theme
Psycho Chicken

How about a show of "B" or Flip sides.Could call it "Songs you didn't know you had".For fun flip the segment order, put the Top Three and New and Noteable in the first segment and the Tresure Chest in the last. As a kid I would only buy a 45 if the flip side was not on the album the hit A side came from.
As a side note I have a 45 that Boy George sued to remove from store shelves because the artist parodied Karma Kamelion without permission."I'm a Milwaukeean" by Guy Herman and the Bubbler Boys 1984 Breezeway Records number 2520 I don't think you'll find this one on itunes.

Along the same lines, what about a Mad Classical Show.
Three that spring to mind.

Pal Yee Achee by Homer & Jethro.
almost anything by Allan Sherman
Carmen by Spike Jones.

Here are some more possibilities:
Logan Whitehurst - That's What It's Like in Japan
Possible Oscar - Dead Nintendo
Whimsical Will - You Can Play My Sega

You could also include songs from video games (assuming they have lyrics), or parodies of such tunes.

--- jmanforever
If we did a video game show, Buckner & Garcia would be obvious, but I would request:

"Invasion of the Gabber Robots" by The Laziest Men on Mars.

It is based on the music & text from the game "Zerowing".

How are you gentlemen? All your base are belong to us! You have no chance to survive! Make your time!

--- garnsr
Is there enough material for a whole video game show? Will there be a year-end show of stuff that came out this year? I like the decades idea, can it be fine-tuned to smaller groups of time? And I think some smaller sections of several topics in one show would help get out some good ideas that don't quite fill a whole two hours.

Since March 10th will be the 132nd anniversary of the first telephone transmission, (Mr. Watson! Come here!...) how about a Mad Music Show theme that deals with the telephone, phone calls, prank calls, etc.

A few I can think of right off:

867-5309 Jenny - Tommy Tutone
Telephone Man - Meri Wilson
Shriner's Convention - Ray Stevens (Operator, gimme room 321)
PEnnsylvania 6-5000 - Glen Miller (NOTE: To this day, (212) 736-5000 is STILL the phone number for the famous New York "Pennsylvania Hotel". Registered in 1919, it is the oldest phone number still in use by the original subscriber.)

Stan Freburg's "Digit Dialing Demonstration" followed by "They Took Away Our Murrayhills" on his album "Freburg Underground! Show #1" would be an important addition to this shows theme.

Here is an idea for the March 9th, 2008 show....

How about a show with songs about Native Americans or other ethnic groups (hopefully funny, not racist or bigoted). For instance, I like the song "Red Wing" that can be found in the cylinder collection of UCSB.

cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/index.php

or some of the National Origin humor found at that website?

With the new school year ahead, how about: "The Mad Music Show Goes to School" or "The School of Mad Music"

Maybe each segment can correspond to a class subject. Grammar alone has many demented songs, here is just a sample:

Other subjects can be Literature, History, Geography, Math, and Science. Math would be the toughest - I can only think of "New Math" by Tom Lehrer. I think we could find plenty of entries for Science.

This issue has come up before. When I asked about it, he said that he had to call the show something (or words to that effect) and that the show wasn't intended to be exclusively music as the name implies, so an all spoken show should be entirely doable if enough of us want to hear one.

This issue has come up before. When I asked about it, he said that he had to call the show something (or words to that effect) and that the show wasn't intended to be exclusively music as the name implies, so an all spoken show should be entirely doable if enough of us want to hear one.

dont know if I or anyone else suggested it but how bout an all spoken word show, with stuff like Eddie izzard and that australian fellow who talks about how tough he is.

Or an all Classic stuff, Pre 1955 or so, or an All Marx brothers, or other old time personality.

Has Captain Wayne had a fishing show or a Baseball show or hao about an All Sport show ?

I heard this on a golden oldies station once, so it not an original topic.

The idea was songs which had been successful only after they were covered by another artist. It was really intriguing to hear how different an original artist conceived of a song compared to the more popular version.

I realize that there may not be as many comedy songs "covered" in the same sense. But maybe some sort of topic which shows how the comedy music has progressed over time.

I don't know. I guess I'm just typing out loud.

How about Before He Cheats (ack, can't think of the artist)
followed by a sequel
Before She is Released by Jethal Silverwing

Jethal Silverwing usually does Everquest Song Parodies, but this song is different. You can find and download his songs (he actually encourages this) at www.kithicor.org/ Check it out, some pretty funny stuff there, even if you dont' play Everquest.

"Do They Have Mogen David in Heaven?" (Can't remember the artist on that one either...a bad memory is the result of a misspent youth!). All fine, slightly demented tunes.

A few more country sequels...

C.W. McCall - Convoy
C.W. McCall - 'Round the World with the Rubber Duck

Jimmy Dean - Big Bad John
Jimmy Dean - Cajun Queen
Jimmy Dean - Little Bitty Bad John (Son Of Big Bad John)

...some of which may not be as funny as some songs, but their novelty nature (Or so I have been told by one tight-arsed program director after another) make them candidates for the Mad Music Show.

For that matter, you could stick Cledus Maggard's "Daddy I Gotta Go" on the end of the two C.W. McCall songs to make a three-song set.

At one country station I used to work at I used to occasionally play "In Heaven There is No Beer" (artist...?) back to back with Tom T. Hall's "I Like Beer" and "Do They Have Mogen David in Heaven?" (Can't remember the artist on that one either...a bad memory is the result of a misspent youth!). All fine, slightly demented tunes.

A lot of 'response' songs happen in Country Music.

Hot Rod Race & Hot Rod Lincon
Wolverton Mountain & Girl from Wolverton Mountain
I think Harper Valley P.T.A. might have had a response.
Homer & Jethro might have responded to He'll Have to Go.

Sheb Wooley/Ben Colder songs are mostly about "answers" to popular country hits, like "Still #2" etc.

--- artpaul
Actaully Jim Reeves song He'll Have to Go was responded to by Jeanne Black with He'll Have To Stay.
It is on a CD called Billboard Top Country Hits: 1960

It includes these 2 other songs:

Please Help me, I'm Falling by Hank Locklin and (I can't help you)I'm Falling Too by Skeeter Davis

I think I read something somewhere that country music allowed answer songs before 1961 but then the disallowed them.

I went to wikipedia and found a whole bunch more in this article called Answer Songs at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Answer_song

How about:

Pencil Neck Geek and The Geek's Revenge

They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa! and I'm Happy They Took You Away, Ha-Haaa!

A Boy Named Sue and The Father Of A Boy Named Sue

The Old Payola Roll Blues and MC Freberg (sequel)

Ballad of Irving and The Son of Irving (also sequel)

Also, songs have to be played in pairs, including the Top Three.

This would make a nice Valentine's Day show theme, but we probably wouldn't want to wait that long for it!

I think this has to be the most creative idea so far.
Just off the top of my head, two that come to mind

Goodbye Earl - The Dixie Chicks
Hey Girls This Is Earl - Ray Stevens

If there isn't enough Q&A songs to fill the 2 hours, it could also include songs and their sequels

Another idea would be a show dedicated to Elvis.

Songs about Elvis and about Elvis Imitators and stuff like on Elvis Million Dollar Batch where Elvis Makes a whole bunch of Mistakes singing songs.

One of my songs that could be played for it would be The Latest Elvis Imitator or At The Elvis Concert or Santa is Elvis all from my The Best of Art Paul Schlosser CD which is availible here at the mp3 store as well as at Apple iTunes.

Another great song would be: Elvis is Everywhere by Mojo Nixon

Or how about: The Immortal Words of the King from Twisted Christmas.

Also maybe you would like to hear I Saw Elvis in a U.F.O. by Ray Stevens or Tiny Tim's I Saw Elvis Tip Toe through the Tulips.

But I'm not sure does Wayne have all these songs ?

I agree with your reasons SP. Also a request show this time is a good idea.

--- Sick Puppy
I can think of two possible reasons for this..... First, lots of requests for the old favourites and none for the underplayed..... Second, Wayne might not have everything in his collection.

The topic has been done before. Check out episode 41, "The Top 40 Most Popular Songs Never Played".

I do agree though... It's about time we had another "Never Played" show, to bring new variety into our Mad Music experience. We could, however, make it a request show this time.

You might want to go back to a year before you joined us and listen to Episode 19, The Long Song Festival I guest hosted. Here is what I calculated for the show:
I've added up the track times to come up with these catagories:
* Played only once or twice on syndicated Dr. Demento - 31:02
* Played more often on syndicated Dr. Demento - 26:36
* Never played on Dr. Demento - 52:56

Just about half never heard before, add 25% for rarities heard for the first time on The Mad Music Show.

I don't know if you'll remember, but I once suggested a show about demented soft rock. I don't think any comedy show has ever done anything like that. I'm sure there's plenty of material to fill two hours. Here are a few examples:

Weird Al - Do I Creep You Out/Frank's 2000" TV

The Dan Orr Project - Nights in White Castle
The great Luke Ski - The Ballad of Optimus Prime
Monty Python - I Bet You They Won't Play This Song on the Radio

You could include any of today's grunge artists.
It took Mozart, Mantovani & Motorhead 50,000 years to bring music from caveman grunts to modern music, it took the average grunge artist 100 years to take it back.

As a request for the show, while it is not strictly speaking a song, how about The Piltdown Man sequence from Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.

True enough. I was thinking more of an all inclusive 'primitive pandemonium' sort of show (Hmm...decent sounding name). Cavemen, dinosaurs, jungles, monkeys, Tarzan even. All things primitive. Haven't clobbered this subject with a stone club yet.

All excellent choices! But are there really two hours worth of caveman songs? Hmm. I'll have to noodle on that. Now, add Dinosaurs to the mix...well, and maybe you still only have an hour or less. Listening to an old MMS, Capt Wayne mentioned a song being taken from an album of obscure novelty songs, maybe that could be a topic, rare or obscure songs.

All excellent choices! But are there really two hours worth of caveman songs? Hmm. I'll have to noodle on that. Now, add Dinosaurs to the mix...well, and maybe you still only have an hour or less. How about PREHISTORIC DEMENTIA covering anything before the dawn of recorded time. You can include "King Tut" and any mummy songs you can think of.

Second the motion and add a request, the theme from It's About Time, a sort of live action Flintstones, where 2 astronauts go back to the days of the caveman.

I had thought of one a while ago...cavemen. The idea seemed to go over well at the time. It also has the advantage of having never been done before. Not here, anyway. I'd still like to hear that show. The Bertha Butt Boogie and Alley Oop and all that...

Howabout a demented Broadway theme since the film shows were so popular. Thank you and God bless. - David Moyer

"Funny Songs by Serious Artists"

For instance, we just recently heard "Twisted" by Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. "Big 10-Inch" by Aerosmith would also fit the category. I'm sure there are enough of these to make a good show, but I can't think of many more right now.

I know we have already done a show on space, but weekend of June 5 is the 60th anniversary of the Roswell crash, should have been a UFO topic.

Cars (Show #38) and Planes (#47) were done. Trains was not done by Wayne, but I believe that it has been done by The Doctor. This is not to sugggest that any topic can't be repeated. You just hope there is enough material so that different songs can be played.

Myths and legends sounds intriguing.

How about MYTHS & LEGENDS? I can think of a few songs that would fit that one. Tho I still like my earlier suggestion of CRIME & PUNISHMENT. How about PLANES,TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES? Has that one been done yet? Shoot, you could probably do a whole show on CARS alone! Call it ODE TO THE HORSELESS CARRIAGE.

How about a show that is All Classic Comercials, I have quite a few downloaded and would be happy to share (all public domain comercials)

Or

The Internet ~"The Soundtrack" made up of songs that made it big thanks to the internet like Dragostei Din Tei (numa numa) or Jung hwa bun jum (the twho chinese boys in B&W) or Ultimate showdown.
The internet Loves novelty songs.

We did Scoundrels, Pirates and Bad Guys Show #37 which is similar. Of course, we would be able to request Jail! again.

How about CRIME? Don't think it's been done before, and with all the stuff that is considered criminal nowadays, there should be plenty of material to fill it.

I'll start with:

The Old Dope Peddler - Tom Lehrer

Maxwell's Silver Hammer - Steve Martin

Supertelevangelistic Sex and Drugs Psychosis - Robert Lund
