Somebody in that market quickly go to some other stations and see if they want to pick up the show. Tell them there are listeners in the area who will be looking for it.

Please don't shoot the messenger, but we are now OFF-THE-AIR in the United States.

...but what a long, strange, demented year it has been.

The newly appointed board of "90.1 The X" has announced the new format, and program lineup for the year, and many programs have been moved, changed, or cut. They seem to be going with more of an urban/hip-hop sound, with a top-40 blend. (I'm not actually sure. After I heard Akon about 4 times, I shut the damn thing off!)

Don't fret, it happens. My Tuesday afternoon Blues music show got bumped as well.

I have Sirius radio. The comedy programming is spotty but improving. They play mostly standup routines with occasional comedy songs. The audio quality though is absolutely dreadful—phasy and thin. Although the music stations are commercial free, the spoken-word ones aren't, and the commercials are REALLY annoying.

Just for grins I sent both XM and Sirius copies of my CD, you never know!

--- fm123
What about Sirius Radio?

They have like 198 channels, which 3 of them are comedy channels. From what I heard, they seem to be of high quality.

Possibly a better choice then XM.

Yes... "We"!

Petitions from an existing fanbase may prompt a look... even if it doesn't all come from their existing market.

Do you know an email address for their programming director?

BTW.... The future "Weird Al" can be heard on The Mad Music Show.

maybe we should start focusing on the stations that are dropping dr. d. due to the talonian threats.

have you seen this posting from krde

Dr. Demento fans, the syndicator of the show has informed us that we must discontinue streaming the show or face losing the right to air it each week. We refuse to let an outsider mandate a web "Black-out" of our programming. This is both unfair to you and costly for us to implement. If you agree, send the doctor a message to cure this problem. Send an e-mail telling them you want the Dr. D show to continue on both FM & the web. Direct your e-mails to: DrDemento@DrDemento.com. If you'd like to hear the show each week, they'd rather have you pay $2 per show on the Dr. Demento website. By doing this, they are limiting the future "Weird Al's" to be heard across this country by cutting potential exposure.

I thought XM sounded like a low-fi MP3 cluster. No treble, just a lot of mid-range frequencies. The comedy channels are all in mono, hardly suitable for music.

The internet is the way to go. Coming soon to a car near you: portable wi-fi? They're working on it, and you may hear Mad Music and millions of other shows while you drive with a streaming moving internet connection.

Translate the mp3 to wav then send to XM? No sound difference will be heard anyway since XM lacks the high frequencies.

Capt'n, I've sent in your Halloween show to XM Sat Radio for consideration for broadcast on Halloween night, and I'll stop by UCR later this week with a DVD of your show's MP3 - there's a midnight slot that just opened up over there that would work well for ya.

Keep up the great work!

That's the idea. Give him enough in the first 30 seconds to convince him to listen further.... then give hime enough in the next 3 to 5 minutes to make him want to make a deal.

--- BorisBadenov
Well, how about this then, on the CD in this order:

- A sample 30 second show promo, maybe geared to airplay or maybe just saying, "Coming up next, on THIS CD!"

- A five minute "mini-segment" or introduction to the show, with a similar leadin to

- Those three random segments I mentioned

I say, make it as easy as possible for them to make up their minds right away. :)

--- Sick Puppy
Of course both are very good ideas. My point was based on the fact that a busy radio executive most likely does not have the time to listen to the whole show... and likely even 20 minute segments.

When you submit a show to a program director, you probably have about 30 seconds to get his interest. If he chooses to continue with the demo, you only have about 5 minutes to give him all the information he needs to decide whether or not he should pursue it any further.

--- BorisBadenov
It's longer than five minutes, but maybe the way to go would be to put one of the six segments of the show onto a CD for distribution. I'd choose one with some good requests to show that yes, people do listen to the show and call in.

For that matter you could put three segments on the CD, one each from three different shows or maybe half of one show.

Years ago, a guy I knew tried to market a show he was planning to produce. He followed the advice he was given by other in the radio business and produced a special demo presentation that just gave an idea what the show was all about.

Getting a program director to set aside 2 hours of his already busy schedule is probably the biggest obstacle to overcome when trying to spread the word of how wonderful the Mad Music Show really is.

Years ago, a guy I knew tried to market a show he was planning to produce. He followed the advice he was given by other in the radio business and produced a special demo presentation that just gave an idea what the show was all about. It demonstrated his working style, proposed program content and brief samples of the music. Best yet, it only required a five minute commitment on the part of the program director. It was pressed on a 45 rpm disc and distributed to radio stations. Once he received replies, he then showed them a full scale program.

I'm not sure if this method is still the most effective today (of course we're using CDs now) but I think it's a good way to get to the guy who just seems to be too busy to listen to a two hour demo.

Wayne... I still have a copy of his original demo and can send you an MP3 of it if you want to consider this method.

I'm going to try a dozen new college stations this week - send them a cover letter and 2-CD set of the same show and just ask them to listen to the whole show and let me know what they think. Of course I'll include the legal facts (and that it's free) so they don't think they're going to get burned.

Congratulations, Captain Wayne! It doesn't seem too long ago that your archives were taken down and you didn't know where this site would go. I think this is just the beginning!

Sorry I've been away for a while. I visit when I can! I need to start spending more time here again!

I've started a website myself honoring Pittsburgh Horror Movie Host "Chilly Billy" Bill Cardille. Here's the link:

www.chillertheatermemories.com/

I've always admired your site, Wayne. You're part of the reason that I decided to try a website of my own. I don't know all of the technical details of the site. I built it through Yahoo and they make it easy.

Again, congratulations! I'll be hanging around more often now that I have the Chiller Theater site up and running.

Actually, Jmanforever is the engineer for the station. He basically took the "Airplanes" show in a played it for the Program Manager who laughed through the whole thing - he loved it so much that he took it before the College Board asking for approval - and it was approved on the first try!

Unfortunately, unless you know someone already in the station who is willing to go to bat with it, we'll have to try the old-fashioned cold-call approach.

I'm going to try a dozen new college stations this week - send them a cover letter and 2-CD set of the same show and just ask them to listen to the whole show and let me know what they think. Of course I'll include the legal facts (and that it's free) so they don't think they're going to get burned.

If we can get popular on the college circuit then we've motivated a large number of active, eager, energetic people to promote us on the commercial stations in their areas (after graduation, or in their home town).

Captain Wayne:

How did Jmanforever accomplish this? Did Jmanforever contact the station and put in a plug with the station or program manager? Are they friends of Jman, or did Jman whip up a convincing sales pitch? If you tell me how Jman did it, I and others here can try to replicate the effort, and maybe get you into a few more stations.

Thanks Devo! Great minds think alike (warped minds maybe?)! I was just driving to an event this morning thinks "Maybe I should send out a press release?" - I do that kind of thing where I work, I just never thought about it for the show. It is newsworthy to me - maybe others too. I know my employer's quarterly newsletter is going to have a short article about it (what employees do in their spare time - picked me as their first one).

I'll put something together - Thanks for the info on www.prweb.com - never knew it was there! I'll also look up the local news outlets on mid-southern Nebraska.

Heck, they're only stamps!
