  • Song Lyrics:
There’s a danger zone, not a stranger zone,
Than the little plot I walk on that I call my home.
Full of eerie sights, weird and skeerie sights:
Every vicious animal that creeps and crawls and bites.

On the Amazon, the prophylactics prowl.
On the Amazon, the hypodermics howl.
On the Amazon, you’ll hear a scarab scowl and sting
    Zodiacs on the wing.

All the stalactites and vicious vertebrae
Hunt the stalagmites, while laryngitis slay
All the parasites that come from Paraguay in spring.
Snarling equinox among the rocks will seize you,
And the Fahrenheit comes out at night to freeze you.
Wild duodenum are lurking in the tress,
And the jungle swarms with green apostrophes!
Oh, the Amazon is calling me.

On the Amazon, the pax vobiscum bite.
On the Amazon, the epiglottis fight.
On the Amazon, the hemispheres at night all slink
    Where the agnostics drink.
All the hippodromes that lie concealed in mud
Hunt the metronomes, that live in swamp and flood.
Then the kodachromes come out and drink their blood - poor ginks.
While velocipedes among the weeds will scare you,
And the menopause with hungry jaws ensnares you!
    Frenzied adenoids infest the hills and slopes;
    Everyone avoids the deadly stethoscopes.
    Oh the Amazon is calling,
    Yes the Amazon is calling,
Oh, the Amazon is calling me!

Google search where I also entered Bobby Howes, the artist who recorded it back when, and also put quotes around "On The Amazon" to reduce the hits for amazon.com entries.

    Tim,

I'm curious where you found this- on a copy of the sheet music? Or was there a google reference I missed?

    Tim,

That's a great clue. Thanks. I hadn't found that association before. I'm curious where you found this- on a copy of the sheet music? Or was there a google reference I missed?

So now I know it's from the show "Mr. Cinder" and have found a source for a piano score to the show. If I can lay hands on the score, work it up, and perform it I'll try to record and post it. Thanks!

You might want to expand your searches to include Music by Vivian Ellis; lyric by Clifford Grey & Great- rex Newman

    Hello,

Aha- "The Songs Of Don McLean, Vol.2 " on Amazon shows up with a picture of the title page and it contains "On The Amazon". The down side is that this rascal is >$100 from several used book sites. Eeek. I'll keep lookin'.

I've had a Brit friend whose father would know about such things take a look and struck out there too. I may be reduced to transcribing...

    Les --

As you are aware this song dates from the 20s or so so finding the original sheet music (which is slightly different from Don's version) might prove to be a bit difficult. However, I remember once upon a time having a Don McLean songbook that included the sheet music from his first three albums, and On The Amazon was definitely in there.

There are about three different Don McLean songbooks listed on Amazon.com that look like likely candidates to have this. Unfortunately Amazon doesn't list the contents so it's hard to tell. (And none of them looks like the one I had way back when, although the last time I remember seeing it was in 1974 so I could easily be remembering wrong)

    Gents,

I'm a singer in a band that does 20s-30s material. I'd love to be able to do this piece. However I'm coming up short when looking for sheet music. Can anyone clue me in where to find at least a piano lead sheet? The full band arrangement from the Howes version would be beyond great- but I'd settle for just not having to exercise my transcribing/arranging skills!

    Thanks,
