Song Lyrics: |
To Bombay A traveling circus came They brought an intelligent elephant and Nellie was her name
One dark night she slipped her iron chain, and off she ran to Hindustan and was never seen again
oooooooooooooooooo... Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus off she went with a trumpety trump trump trump trump
Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and trundled off to the jungle off she went with a trumpety trump trump trump trump
Night by night she danced to the circus band When Nellie was leading the big parade she looked so proud and grand
No more tricks for Nellie to perform They taught her how to take a bow and she took the crowd by storm
oooooooooooooooooo... Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus off she went with a trumpety trump trump trump trump
Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and trundled off to the jungle off she went with a trumpety trump trump trump trump
The head of the heard was calling far far away they met one night in silver light on the road to Mandalay
oooooooooooooooooo... Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus off she went with a trumpety trump trump trump trump
Nellie the elephant packed her trunk and trundled off to the jungle off she went with a trumpety trump trump trump trump (davidlougy) |

Album release date confirmed. This sort of thing goes on all the time - especially now that a song can simply be put on the net without all that tedious "hire agent, miraculously get record contract, then manager steals all your money" crap. Songs are often singles (sometimes unreleased) before their inclusion on an album. This appears to be the case here. The date will remain 1982.

On their 1983 album Dig That Groovy Baby. Released in March of 1983. I also found out that they originally covered this in 1982 but wasn't released until 1983 on their album. But it did chart the UK Singles Charts in 1984. So in all actuality, the song was originally from 1982 but not released until 1983.

Here is proof that it was from 1984, not 1982: archive.org/details/cftp-2018-01-19

"I'm going to go with...no." At the very least, check the show playdates above. Dr. D. first played this song in November of 1983. And that's when he discovered it and played it first. It could have been released months or years before that. And never trust the internet when finding a song's release date. I check multiple sites first. A lot of things suddenly appear on YouTube first, so there is no official release date.
