Facts:
  • A song about being in the studio and/or audio patch bay cables. The lyrics contain red herrings like "sure you know what I'm talking about" to make you think that the song is about...what you think it's about. Patch cables are usually color coded (pink) and when effects are applied the signal is considered 'wet'. The line "maybe I think they can probably hear me" basically says the "snakes" are conducting an audio signal, probably from Frank's mic. "They live in a...tiny hole that is usually empty" is a reference to a 1/4" audio jack. SMPTE stands for Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and the line "keeps them in sync" is a reference to the SMPTE time code used to align audio and video for movies or television. "I'll take all I can get" is a reference to never having enough cables in a studio.

...So get your minds out of the gutter. (Stavro Arrgolus)
  • From the 1979 album SHEIK YERBOUTI. (sav-man)
  • This song also served as the title tune for a 1979 Zappa concert film (which was released in 1983, w/ a similarly-titled soundtrack album as well). (sav-man)
  • Tommy Mars (the keyboardist in Zappa's band at the time) is the one singing the high-pitched vocals on the chorus. (sav-man)
  • Was the b-side of Zappa's 1979 hit, "Dancin' Fool." (sav-man)
  • From the 1979 album SHEIK YERBOUTI. (sav-man)
  • Cute double-entendre song from Mr. Zappa. (sav-man)
  • Song Lyrics:
    Baby snakes

Late at night is when they come out

    Baby snakes

I'm sure you know what I'm talkin' about
    Pink 'n' wet
They make the best kind of pet

    Baby, baby snaaaaakes

Looked around an' there's a couple
    right near me

    Baby snakes

Maybe I think they can probably hear me
    Pink 'n' wet
I'll take all I can get

    Baby, baby, baby snaaaaaaaaakes...yeah

They live in a ho-ho-hole (tiny hole)
that is usually empty (usually empty, tiny too)
They live by a code (dit dit, dit dit, dit dit, dit dit)
    That is usually SMPTE
    Which stands for
Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers

    But maybe I think
that is what keeps them in sync
    They're wet and they're pink
I think I'll give 'em a, give 'em a, give 'em a drink

    Baby snaaaaaaaaaaakes
