fiogf49gjkf0d 'Fair' & 'well paid' are 2 different things and are at the center of all this. It's been a long time since sports were about the game. Somebody's generation got spoiled with, among other things, larger than life sports personalities- Ali, McEnroe, Madden, ...oh, you know who they are. Guys who took what were otherwise becoming boring sports to watch and made them popular again with their charisma as much, if not more than, their actual abilities. And when they went away, you demanded the same from all who followed. And if they weren't the super charismatic sportsmen you were accustomed to, or worse, if they were the sports equivalent of corporate hacks like Bonds, just there to do a job, then screw them. Bonds doesn't entertain us in the way we want and is therefore a complete bastard, so put an asterisk next to his record to remind future generations of players that they'd better be as amusing as they are talented, for the cult of personality rules....
Kinda makes you want to turn off the TV and take up chess.
[Why do I only think of this crap at 3 in the morning?!? How annoying...]
