fiogf49gjkf0d Ok, here's my first attempt at a song. I've taken to writing lyrics over at amiright with BADave and decided to see what I could do to perform one out. Again, with no musical talent, I thought I'd try. So here's the song: soundclick.com/share?songid=7717336 Called, "Bill Shatner" So, I know I have a long, long, long way to go. How do ya'll record songs? What do you suggest for a good mic to use with a laptop with audacity (or any other programs with are better?) I can't spend a lot of money because my wife doesn't think much of my 'current obsession' (it may be.) I have a friend who said he's be up for being my musical background in future en devours who is quite talented. I'll think about taking him up on that so I can get away from recording background music from youtube. I've got a long, long, long way to go :)

fiogf49gjkf0d Whoo hoo! Thank you everyone for my second song making the chart (as will be posted tomorrow)! Here I was thinking Famesque had no chance anymore as it has cycled off the automatic list but everyone surprised me. Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you!
Now to start working on some Christmas ideas :)

fiogf49gjkf0d Well, I think it's getting better slowly. I bought a USB headphone and microphone. I bought Acid Music Studio 7.0 and am enjoying playing around with it. I produced a new song, "Famesque" which was triggered by the Henne family (Balloon boy) but encompasses more than them. My first try at rap, which knowing me, is not my cup of tea as I grew up with a lazy tongue and still murmur most of the time when talking. Enunciation needs to become my friend.
So, anyways, here's a link to "Famesque": Famesque
Hope it's enjoyable.

fiogf49gjkf0d I find it amazing that anything I produce gets airtime. It is something I do because I have always wanted to do it but know that I am as musically talented as a can of root beer. Tonight, I had the opportunity to call into the skype line with DJ Particle and the Revenge of the Particle. She played two of my songs, "The Chef" and "The Connecticut Nursing Fraud Association." I am ever so grateful for getting those songs out there and hope that someone is enjoying them. I am hoping the quality is getting better too. Personally, I think the low songs like Springsteen and country fit me better, but I need to put some more practice and effort into this. I am having a blast though!

fiogf49gjkf0d Wow, what a week. B.A. Dave and DJ Particle both played "Tweets" on their respective shows. Talk about surprising.
I wasn't especially happy with that release -- right now I am in the hunt and peck stage of my musical career... mainly because I still have no musical intrumentation talent. With my new song, "Saving Hyrule", I used what I knew to make the music -- computers. I bought a program - Cakewalk Music Creator 5 - and began to fool around with it. I first played with loops and make "Going Home" -- a silly song that isn't too true, most of the time. On that one, I made the music first, then tried to make words that fit. Then, looking through the program, saw the guitar fret feature and thought I'd see if I could convert chords to playable. After talking to a talented guitar playing friend, I was better able to read chords and began converting it over and now I am very happy with the results that became "Saving Hyrule". I have been looking at going back and going through the same slow and tedious process to work on "Bill Shatner" because I really like that song and singing over a youtube rendition isn't very cool.
Learning with each new song some do's and don't. And hopefully getting better with the annunciation.

fiogf49gjkf0d Well, I have been having fun with this lately. Got a real microphone but still going off the mic jack in the front of my laptop. My wife is less than excited about spending any kind of large Jack to get better equipment, which is understandable since I'm new to all this. Of course, first day recording and I broke the adapter from the large stereo jack to small headphone jack. What a cheap piece of junk. Did you know Fry's and Walmart don't carry that adapter by itself anymore? Scary. Walmart had it with another small microphone or as an adapter on some Karaoke CD's so I am looking at the later, or just heading down to Radio Shack because they have everything. Anyway, I now have 5 songs on Soundclick but my newest one is the first I am truly happy with. It's a parody of "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn and John about Clash of the Titans. While I still need to work on enunciation and vocals, I am satisfied and think the lyrics are pretty good that it may overcome my shortcomings. Clash of the Bright One

fiogf49gjkf0d Looks like a great deal on this package for just two Ben Franklin's - www.zzounds.com/item--BEHPODCASTFW
Bob Guest: --- A general rule would be to avoid using the inputs to your Sound Blaster card or built in sound system. My choice is the Podcastudio by Behringer. It is available in both a USB and Firewire interface... and I personally think the Firewire package is the best.

fiogf49gjkf0d Taken into consideration. Thank you very much. :) And it's price is reasonable... very nice suggestion.
Song 2 is up: Manny's Lament Manny's Lament on Soundclick
Bob Guest: --- A general rule would be to avoid using the inputs to your Sound Blaster card or built in sound system. My choice is the Podcastudio by Behringer. It is available in both a USB and Firewire interface... and I personally think the Firewire package is the best.
There are good reasons why this is a much better idea than going for a USB mic.
It comes with a mixer, so you can use it to control inputs from vocals or instrumentals, using the mic that comes with it. You can also plug your instruments directly into it.
Since the mixer has its own controls, you can avoid having to fiddle around with software controls. Believe me, real knobs are much easier to work with when you are making adjustments during recording.
Since all the parts beyond the computer interface are standard components, you can upgrade to a bigger mixing board or better mics as your needs and budget allows.
If all you have is a USB mic, then you cannot loop your midi (or other instrumentals) through it. You'd have to use the Sound Blaster. Compare my songs Twilight Zone, Part One (which was recorded with the Podcastudio) with The Ballad Of Captain Wayne (which was recorded through my Sound Blaster). Notice the difference.
My advice... Give yourself room to work and get an interface that sends everything through the USB or Firewire.
