The reason I bring him up is that Allen Sherman mentioned him in a little portmanteau song he did on his first album, "Shticks and Stones." The tune is an old spiritual that starts "Little David, play on your harp":

"Little David Susskind, shut up,
Please don't talk, please don't talk."

David Susskind (December 19, 1920, New York City - February 22, 1987, New York City) was best known as a pioneer TV talk show host. His program, Open End, began in 1958 on WNTA-TV in New York City, and was appropriately titled: the program continued until Susskind or his guests were too tired to continue. In 1961 Open End was constrained to two hours and went into national syndication. The show was retitled The David Susskind Show in 1967 and continued until 1986.

During his almost 30-year run as a talk show host, Susskind covered many controversial topics of the day, such as race relations and the Vietnam War. Susskind's interview of Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev, which aired in October 1960, during the height of the cold war, generated national attention.

Susskind was also a noted producer, with scores of movies, plays, and TV programs to his credit. He married (and later divorced) Joyce Davidson, a Canadian-American television personality. David Susskind is interred at Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Husdon, New York.

Try introducing her to Allen Sherman too. He is of the same general time frame as Stan Freberg. You might have to listen to the songs to make sure they are accessible to a nine year old, though -- for instance she probably has no idea what Green Stamps are, or who David Suskind was, but she'd almost certainly get a kick out of "Eight Feet Two, Solid Blue" and "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah."

Try introducing her to the children's songs of Woody Guthrie. It's the words and the word play that she might like. That will plant the seeds of listening for the joke(s).

Stan Freberg had a lot of character comedy on top of the words.

I am happy to announce that my nephew's nine-year-old son, Robert, has fallen in love with the works of Stan Freberg. Now if I could just get his younger sister interested.
