fiogf49gjkf0d I Still Get Demented #14-33 June 21, 2014
* The I Still Get Demented Radio Show #14-33 * Date: June 21, 2014
* Stream it now! * www.madmusic.com/playlist.aspx?show=ISGD-14-33 * Subject: ISGD's Salute to Casey Kasem: 1970-1988 AT40-era Charting Novelty Songs Part 1 * Parts 2 and 3 will air at later dates during the year
* Before I continue, I want to dedicate this episode to the memory of countdown king * Casey Kasem, who inspired countless radio deejays to begin their own versions of * a countdown show such as Top 40's Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40 (which was created in 1983 * when former AT40 affiliate KIIS-FM in Los Angeles let the show go in a dispute,) * Dick Clark's National Music Survey, Z-Rock's Top 50 rock and roll hits of the week, * Jeff Wyatt's American Dance Traxx, Dr. Demento's Top 10 for KMET and Funny Five * for syndication and a Los Angeles version for his live shows, The Countdown for * rhythm and blues radio stations, Jed the Fish's Out of Order for alternative rock, * and a show I created in 2014, The Dementia Top 20, currelty hosted by DJ Particle * as part of a show called "Mad Music's Top 20 Revenge."
* When I became a fan of countdown shows, it was about 1973 when a local station KCBQ * 1170 counted down the top 30 requests of the week for the station. For years before * Casey began a national countdown show, radio stations began their own countdown shows * based on requests or sales or both in various angles based on their playlist, and it's * a tradtion that continues today on local stations that count down requests of the day * or week.
* Casey's master of the presentation was to be positive about the artists, avoid gimmicks * and cheap laughs, add some non-tabloidish facts to the artists he's playing, keep the * show family oriented (no profanity and minimize swearing as needed), and enthusiastic * among other things I observed from listening to his shows from 1979-1985 on a few * local stations that carried his show. He also added some mystery as he went into a * commercial break when he gave some clues about an artist he was going to talk about * in the second song of the next break.
* AT40 also taught me how some of the radio music business worked. When I see some songs * peaking no higher than #30, then it's likely we'll never hear that song played on radio * ever again. Songs peaking at #10 are somewhat likely to be heard on niche formats like * rock, country, or urban but not necessarily on the top hit stations. Most of the Top 10 * songs (though there are some that we never hear from ever again) continue to get played * on many stations of various formats.
* Casey was also a cartoon voice actor for cartoons such as Batman as Robin, Josie * and the Pussycats as Alexander Cabot III (who looks like a spiffed up Shaggy, which * he was most famous for), Cattanooga Cats as Groovy, Peter Cottontail in the Easter * special, Hong Kong Phooey, What's New Mr. Magoo as Waldo, Battle of the Planets as Mark, * himself in the 1984 film Ghostbusters as a voice, The Transformers as Kasey Kasem * Homeboys in Outer Space as a guest playing Spacy Kasem, but did you know that he counted * down the Top 10 Favorite Numbers from 1 to 10 on David Letterman's Late Show?
* In the late 70s to early 80s, Casey was also a staff announcer for NBC-TV.
* To close, in this dedication episode, as I Still Get Demented is a funny recording show, * we'll salute the memory of Casey as we simply play many of the novelty songs that * hit the Billboard Top 10 weekly charts from 1970-1974. Due to time constraints, I had * to leave out "Timothy" by the Buoys and another one. July 4, 1970 was the first date * of Casey's AT40 show with the #1 song by Three Dog Night, "Mama Told Me Not to Come."
* In future weeks, we'll produce more episodes of ISGD as it will play the novelty songs * that hit the Top 40 from 1970-1988, the era of the AT40 hosted by Casey Kasem.
* Also thanks to Dr. Demento for inspiring many funny music shows including this one.
