I don't know that it's becoming more mainstream; just easier to access and ubiquitous. Everyone and their brother seems to be posting a something on you tube these days. The golden age has certainly passed.

Hi there SBR,

I've been a member now for about 2-3 years, and it's always been like this, so I don't know any different.

I have learned recently that it is still an active social network for dementia music "insiders", even though Facebook has taken over some of this also. Wish I'd have known about it in it's heyday.

I believe that dementia music is becoming more mainstream, (Jimmy Fallon, Lonely Island, LMFAO, etc.), and I hope that pioneers like madmusic, the FuMP and dementia radio get millions of members.

Hello everyone,

I've been away from the forum for a few years and have returned only recently. I've noticed that this once thriving community has gone sporadic at most. What happened? Has interest in the hobby just died down quite a bit? Did everyone move to another board? Did life just get in the way, as was my case? Or is the community just dwindling? Rec.Music.Dementia is all but deserted too. I've been wondering this for quite some time and just figured I'd log in and post to perhaps find out.
I notice that many of the shows are still up and running (and sounding great). But beyond that, the "dementia/novelty/comedy/whatever" genre seems to be a bit quiet. Perhaps it's just me and a fundamental lack of like-minded individuals in my area. Who knows...

Thanks!

We could always attempt to figure something out. I'm not surprised to hear that people stuff the ballot box though. I remember emailing Dr. Demento once about it and he had the same problem at the time with certain songs. Anyhow, I do get the impression that this type of music has gone out of style for now; I'm sure it'll be back. But you never know, really.

Now how hard would it be for Wayne to do this for me and the Mad Music Show/Podcast? It would be nice to have song contests again. The problem would then become snagging enough participants.

I think choosing the contest topic's the easy part. It can often be chosen for you - holidays, topical events, etc. I remember a while back there was a contest elsewhere about the moon that there was a lot of participation in. The bitch is in the logistics - all the problems I previously described, among other things. Sort those out effectively and we have contests again.

I've always wanted to do a song writing contest but I can never think on what the songs should be about or if they should just be random.

Which is why Wayne gave me the ability to see who votes for what and from which IP address on the MMT20. I wish it could be a secret ballot, but 2008 showed us why that just can't work.

Suppose I set up a page like contest dot davesfunstuff dot com, but the ballots would be sent to your e-mail address instead of mine. There you can see the duplicate IP addresses that come in.

As for the song contests, I'd have loved to have had one for Xmas last month...but there's a reason we don't have them any more. Certain people were creating fake accounts (with or without help) and stuffing the ballot box. I kept screenshot proof of it happening in my photo files, just in case. This happened more than once and we thought it a travesty and a little depressing to continue having them knowing it was unfair to others who didn't cheat and that this would just happen again.

The early 2000s decade were a boom to dementia on the Internet due to radio cutting Dr. Demento off the airwaves. I created dfsxradio's stream on live365 in the year 2000 to stream some of the demented songs. It's now gone.

Still here. There's so much to listen to here, I can't even get to all of it most weeks. There used to be a lot more conversation as well.

One problem also is the frequent spammers.

No, we knew we were committing active membership suicide with the decision, but it was slightly better than losing the site completely. And you know the RIAA. They'd have gone after Wayne for every song play on every show he made.

As you know only too well, comedy music, like everything else, trends. The middle of the oughts was a good time for dementia. It created this site & The FuMP. Now, maybe not as much. Dr. Demento had to retreat from radio to the net with the rest of us. So things blow goats a bit now. It'll be back. It always comes back.

I thought it was simply a cost-saving measure because the streamcast licence was a lot less than the podcast licence.

Wayne's lawyer warned him to stop podcasting copyrighted tunes. Even though dues are still paid to ASCAP & BMI yearly, those songs can't be put on iTunes. Only Creative Commons songs can be legally podcast.

I'm open for discussing funny music in general as well as my own demented recording projects and shows I produce. You can find me on the Dr. Demento group on Facebook where I sometimes post videos there, something I can't easily do here.

I'd like to see a song contest conducted here every now and then. Any volunteers? What theme would you have (Dr. Who, Star Wars, parodies of one very popular song at the moment, etc.)? We had one for The Three Stooges two days years ago.

Some of us are still here. A lot of members hang out at Facebook now because it is so popular. Dr. Demento has a page there. Most of the FuMP artists are active there also. I think we lost some members by not having Song Contests during the holidays, and the podcast feed not working for over a year.

(just my opinion)

I was just wondering where all the general demented talk and camaraderie went off to. I don't have any issues with people promoting their shows and material, but I sort of miss the "community" aspect of it. I know we're out there. But where, indeed.

For what it's worth, I am usually available for e-mail/PM chatting about various dementia, so feel free to talk.

I remember those "does anybody know this song" questions. I know all about the podcasting and ASCAP/BMI issues. I was just wondering where all the general demented talk and camaraderie went off to. A podcast is something that is published. If you want ASCAP/BMI music you need a publishing agreement in addtion to the streaming license. Personally, I can't see why this stops most from coming hear to stream the available shows.

It also looks like instead of many talking general dementia and our own lives, we only see promotions from those that only stay on the site long enough to post them and the request forums for at least 4 shows. Hard to get a conversation going with just that. It takes someone making their first post during a visit to seem to do more. We also don't seem to get those "Does anybody know what song this is that I only remember part of?" questions.

Only Creative Commons songs can be legally podcast.
...for the record, it should be said that at the time, the other 2 admins then, Tim and myself, if I remember correctly, were in agreement that the non-CC podcasts had to stop or risk the lawyers shutting down the site entirely. This was a few years ago, of course.

I'll tell you what happened.

Wayne's lawyer warned him to stop podcasting copyrighted tunes. Even though dues are still paid to ASCAP & BMI yearly, those songs can't be put on iTunes. Only Creative Commons songs can be legally podcast.

When the podcasts stopped, our membership vanished. Thousands of active members became hundreds before long and it's been that way ever since. The shows are all still available to hear - just not on iTunes.

10:15 pm: Now that I'm awake again and I've had a chance to contemplate it all a bit more, for the record, it should be said that at the time, the other 2 admins then, Tim and myself, if I remember correctly, were in agreement that the non-CC podcasts had to stop or risk the lawyers shutting down the site entirely. This was a few years ago, of course.

Despite efforts to counter the action by adding more shows, things haven't been quite the same, membership-wise.

This is why we need to update the history page. People want to know these things...
