And thanks to Tyro for looking after the dump last year when I had to hide out from the virus in Europe with my undead relatives in the catacombs of their drafty castles. Everything is locking down over there again so it's just as well that I'm back in New England.

And now, the message:

Using random letters/symbols to fill out the needlessly long (yes, I acknowledge that) sign-up page is verboten! It's a violation of our TOS and such accounts will always be suspended whenever encountered.

The sign in page was made 16 or so years ago when there was considerably less paranoia about privacy and such. It asks for all that info because at the time we had only one show on the site and it gave out prizes occasionally - we needed to know the addresses to send the prizes to. We aren't working for the Chinese or Russians (they were both attacking our site regularly at the time) and selling your info to Beijing.

The page could use a bit of simplification...ok, more than just a bit.

Actually, a message from an editor other than uncle Stavro.

Two weeks ago, Uncle escaped the country and is now on an extended visit with Grandpa Aarhus at his place in Denmark. If the coronavirus wants the old man now, it'll have to go to Jutland, dig 30 meters down into the catacombs of the ruins of Aarhus' castle and drag him out. The last time I checked, viruses didn't have arms...or shovels.

Meanwhile, I'm going to look after things here for a bit. This whole virus affair has made Uncle more bastardly than usual (I'm sure you've noticed), so cooler heads are called for. Not being alive gives one a unique & detached perspective towards things, so it would seem I'm "up to bat" as you Yanks say.

So, who's up for a quick show about viruses, sickness and death from the perspective of someone who's already dead?

Former resident troll...

Thought you'd just be a smartass and send "less threatening" malware spam last Saturday & get away with it, didn't you? Yeah, right.

You would have - If you had stopped doing it AND if you didn't send (at least) one of our other members malware spam demanding money.

I can just tell you to go to hell. Who's going to look after their safety on this site?  - One annoyed old editor guy, that's who.

With owner approval - This is HIS site, not mine; I felt obligated to get approval first - I finish off the last of your accounts and will do the same to any new ones. Yes, I'll know it's you.

It's too bad; you otherwise make a positive if rather arrogant & demanding contribution around here. But I've received too many complaints (and attacks) to ignore it any longer.

Time for a site update.

The nasty business of links leading to insecure pages is fixed. Safer site = good.

Also, all trolls who continue to send me or any of our people malware spam will be stomped like a narc at a biker rally. ...permanently this time.

More to come.

And now for a quick message about the Xmas stream & banner.

Since this was the shortest possible holiday season (Thanksgiving took place on the very last day of the month it possibly could), Mad Music Radio will continue to play holiday music for a few extra days to make up for the needlessly short Xmas season. Just because.

Yes, it's good to be the site editor...

This will end on the 30th when it's replaced on the homepage by the New Year banner (assuming there is one - I haven't looked yet). When the decade is new again and the final holiday of this truncated holiday season ends, we go back to the humdrum, day to day, business as usual sort of thing.

And yes, that was a Skyrim reference.

Time for an important site safety tip.

Even though the site now has HTTPS protection, there are still insecure pages. This is due to certain pages having added images. ...But that's not the only bad part.

Most if not all of the added links to other parts of the site lead to the insecure "www.madmusic.com" site. What's worse is that even if you add a link containing the "HTTPS", it will be converted to the insecure link by the site.

Most actual site functions are ok, but new or existing links added by any of us lead to the insecure pages. Navigate anywhere from there and you'll remain on the insecure site. So check the URL now & then to make sure your page is secure.

Stavro Arrgolus   Offline  -  Editor, MP3  -  09-22-19 10:53 AM  -  4 years ago

Just a quick note here.

When you make an account, don't do this - www.madmusic.com/madspace.aspx?id=200702

Random characters are suspicious as hell. I always perceive such accounts to be malicious and immediately suspend any silly jackoff who uses them. I've nailed this particular yahoo twice already. So don't...just don't.

At the polite request of a DJ of ours, I've removed a post about his show from this forum.

No one speaks for our shows or their makers around here but them. Especially not me. ...Unless action is requested by them. Like now, for instance.

Stavro Arrgolus   Offline  -  Editor, MP3  -  07-30-19 03:02 PM  -  4 years ago

HTTPS has now been reestablished on the site.

If you have the site bookmarked or in your tabs when you open your browser, you'll want to update it for security's sake. And possibly change your password as well as it was insecure for a while.

Or else certain fat bastards might steal your password & constantly bomb your email account with malware spam....or something. Just saying.

Stavro Arrgolus   Offline  -  Editor, MP3  -  11-16-18 11:35 PM  -  5 years ago

Indeed, you've hit on an issue that I've thought about for quite a while since we started crediting song pages this way a few site upgrades ago.

SO many of the artists I look up on the ASCAP/BMI/SESAC sites for Work ID numbers are actually affiliated with PRS, SOCAN or something entirely other (but mostly PRS) and I think, "Are we crediting this properly? ASCAP has an ID for a song, but the artist is with PRS. Should we add the artist's affiliation to the song page? Are the lawyers going to go after Wayne again because we were 'doing it wrong?' "

Even if we do it right, does crediting the correct source(s) even matter? It didn't seem to in this case. We may have been (and possibly still are) using material affiliated with organizations way outside of the ones Wayne pays for.

But that's not an answer to the question, is it? Most of what we use, no matter who the artist is affiliated with, has an Work ID from one of the 'big 3' (even the anime & brony songs) , so, from a legal standpoint, we should be able to play it. All this is making me question how we're doing things again.

Was John Pinette an AFTRA or SAG artist and NOT ASCAP, BMI and SESAC? I'm guessing that could be the reason.

After all this started in April, Wayne sent me a copy of the lawyer's cease & desist letter. They were rather specific about what Pinette's estate found objectionable, so Wayne removed everything they listed. They found & cited every last page, on which it's ludicrously obvious what shows the material was played on. There was no objection to this (if it was, that would have been the first of their demands, but as mentioned, Wayne pays his licensing dues, so...), and they were also careful not to demand the artist page itself be taken down - info about Pinette isn't copyright infringement.

Halfshell:

Did the lawyer disclaimer cover bout past broadcast and playlist the Dis already play and posted and are available to listened to will they have to be edited or disabled for anyone pulling up the show and listen to that portion where any of John's material is available to listen to?
Dave AuJus   Offline  -  Artist & D.J.  -  11-16-18 05:08 PM  -  5 years ago

I can't answer Halfshell's question because I don't know. It does seem pretty stupid that the lawyers would target Mad Music because Wayne pays BMI, ASCAP, etc to cover licensing, yet all of John's routines are still posted on youtube. Does not make sense to me. I did post a warning note on John Pinette's artist page so the deejays here will not use or add any of his material (again). The guy was FUNNY, too bad we can't play his stuff any longer.

Stavro Arrgolus:

Time to put some of these old threads to better use.

I posted about this just after it happened, but should have mentioned it on the main forum long before now. Xmas is coming, so I'll state this again here before the Xmas shows make things hectic and I forget again.

In case you missed it, a while back, the lawyers sent Wayne a cease & desist about the works of the late John Pinette. All pages they objected to (content related - song & album pages) were removed and it needs to stay that way.

His artist page remains since it wasn't wasn't one of the pages objected to, but nothing will be permitted to be added to it. I think I can leave out the 'or else'. The message that this is a legal affair is clear enough.

That was a couple of stupid programming bugs - will have it fixed in the morning. A few keystrokes and all will be better!

Oh, and the D.J.'s being able to upload their shows and enter their playlists will be (probably) by Sunday.

Now back to the "editor's message' for a moment.

The (mostly internal) site improvements yesterday & today have gone well. Tim & I can now fix most things ourselves. The larger things involving posting shows & playlists will come a bit later. But....

The new 'duration' feature on the song pages is currently generating random times and all albums and songs originally by 'various artists' are now credited to just one. The wrong one. Since this happens on thousands of pages, we can't possibly get it all, so a little programming magic is required. Just in case anyone sees this stuff and says WTF.

Other than all that, I can edit properly now, so I'm a contented editing maniac.

For those who still haven't heard, the site's instant messaging is malfunctioning. If you send an IM to me or Tim or Wayne, it's unlikely to get through right now. We aren't ignoring you. Just want to mention all this again as there are a lot of members that joined quite a while ago who've returned over the holidays because of the bulk e-mail that was sent out and may have questions. It's better to use the MadSpace's e-mail function or post in my editor's blog for questions until all this is fixed.

Also, there's a rather nasty problem that's resurfaced involving regular members not being able to post new threads in this forum. This is likely due to a reload following an attack on the site by our happy Russian & Chinese friends that undid a previous fix. For now, use the blogs to post message threads until this can be repaired.

Just in case anyone hasn't heard all this already.

...and the naughty bits of Mr. Edward Heath. - Crap! Couldn't resist.
