fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Spaff. I apologize for the rude reply.
|
|
fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d I have updated the "Hear it..." information on David Tanny's and Odd Austin Aeschliman's tracks.
Still accepting contributions too. Any female artists out there willing to help balance out the testosterone?

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Correction:
My version of Hey Birthday Boy won't be sold on Stupid Audio CD. It will remain as a free download on podsafemusicnetwork.com
Also, it seems that Spaff has a personal problem with me and taken my link and contribution off of his CD.
Explaination?

And they're awesome. Not just "Hey Birthday Boy" and "Hey Birthday Girl," but also "Hey Birthday Hermaphrodite" and "Hey Birthday Eunuch." I'm not sure whether the word I'm looking for right now is "awed" or "odd." But I'm happier every day that this project exists.

Is the tune itself set in stone, or just the lyrics? Just curious of the specifics... ^_^
*edit* i'm guessing the music is up o the artist, since that allows fo so many variations...heh...sorry, i read good.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Art Paul: Yes. I hereby commit to getting this CD completed and out during 2008.
Eric: Awesome! Bring it on!
All: Just yesterday, I received a shiny new addition to the collection: "Hey Birthday Boy" as performed by Odd Austin Aeschliman! And - coolness of all coolnesses - Sudden Death included their version on their latest CD, Fatal Error: www.thefump.com/store_release.php?id=29
I have updated the project page at www.spaff.com/birthday
All you other musical types: I anxiously await YOUR version.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d I'll do it.
|
|
fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d So do you think you will be releasing The Hey Birthday Boy CD project sometime this year ?
|
|
fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Well, that is an awfully good question.
At the moment, I'm waiting patiently for versions from Worm Quartet, Robert Lund, and the great Luke Ski. But I must admit that I haven't nagged any of them for awhile, so I hereby commit to start nagging them again.
Meanwhile, since the window is still open, there is still time for - and all the other participants and future recipients would love to receive - a version from YOU, dearest musical MMA reader/participant.
And, yes, I'm talking to YOU, Veronique Chevalier. And YOU, Eric Haines. And YOU, Ken Turetzky. And YOU, TV's Kyle. And YOU, DJ Particle. And YOU, David Tanny. And YOU, Nuclear Bubble Wrap. And YOU, you musical entity, you, whose name is eluding me at the moment but will undoubtedly return as soon as I hit Post Message.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Hey I was curious is this CD coming out soon ?
|
|
fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d I now have a web page up to chart the contributors to the project and the status of the CD: www.spaff.com/birthday
If you've done a version of "Hey Birthday Boy," please check the page to make sure I have you listed and that I link to the web page you want me to pimp for you.
I think we're getting close to a wrap on this thing. Robert Lund, Worm Quartet, and the great Luke Ski have all told me they'd do versions of the song, so I'm leaving the door open for them. Meanwhile, I'll gladly accept any other versions that come in.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d I write a lot of song parodies, but "Hey Birthday Boy" is different in that it's not an intentional rewrite of an existing song. The melody is so simple, however, that I'm reluctant to take credit for it; as soon as I do, someone is going to say, "Hey, that's the melody of [fill in title]!" (I suppose it does sound a bit like the Duke of York song, doesn't it?)
xoxox Spaff
--- karlap And how about the tune? I thought it sounded a little like The Grand Old Duke of York ("and when you're up you're up") but I just listened to that song again and it is quite different.
--- Spaff.com (And, yes, I wrote the lyrics.)

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Killer idea, Bob.
Hey everyone: I just got Art Paul's recordings today, so add him to the big ol' list! Yay! (And, yes, I wrote the lyrics.)

--- Project Sisyphus What a great idea, we could donate proceeds to crippled children or something. If we can't find any, we could just get some regular children and cripple'em.
|
|
fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d I was just wondering Spaff did you write the lyrics ?

--- Spaff.com I'll figure out a way to make all versions available to everyone, by the way. Maybe Wayne can sell the collection as an album in the MP3 Store and we'll donate proceeds to the Red Cross - so that more kids can have more birthdays or something. Just a thought.

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Spookster: I'm glad you're in! I'll wait for you. Shoot, this was supposed to be done by July. What's a couple more weeks?
Bob: Just promise me that by next year at this time, you will have taught the whole family the song. Heh heh.
And for anyone who's keeping score at home: I just got completed versions from Rob Balder, Godfather of The FuMP. Yay!

fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Yesterday my family was together for (Canadian) Thanksgiving and it was also my wife's birthday. I guess I should have sung it when requested, but somebody started singing The Birthday Dirge instead.
Looking forward to hearing the completed CD.

|
fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Do you have a deadline on this project? Don our bass player in going on vacation for 10 days so we can’t do anything till he gets back, but we want to!

|
fjrigjwwe9r2threads:MessageText fiogf49gjkf0d Back in May, I invited anyone interested to perform/record their version of "Hey Birthday Boy," an ultra-simple birthday song I wrote for Robert Lund's then-upcoming birthday.
The idea was (and remains) to collect as many versions of "Hey Birthday Boy" (and its transgendered twin, "Hey Birthday Girl") as possible, slap them onto a CD, and send copies of the CD to all the participants - as well as to funny music DJs like Dr. Demento, Captain Wayne, and David Tanny. And then, who knows? - maybe one of these recordings will become THE fave b-day tune for generations to come.
My plan was to have the CD out by July. It's, what, October now? Rather than put the blame for the delay on myself, where it squarely belongs, I'm going to blame Robert Lund. You see, I don't feel like this collection would be complete without his version of the song. He has put pretty much all of his spare time, however, into his new CD, "Politicked Off!" The good news is that *that* CD should be out by next week, so hopefully I can finally get him to record "Hey Birthday Boy."
What the delay means is that there's still time for YOU - or any musicians you know - to get in on the project. You'll be in good company. So far, here's who has sent me recordings of "Hey Birthday Boy" and/or "Hey Birthday Girl": - Phil Alexander (with Nonie and Edmund Alexander) - Phil Alexander (with Nonie, Richard, Edmund and Cecilia Alexander) - Below Average Dave - Karl Brown - The Charnstars - Rick Cormier - Rick Duncan - Bob Guest - Merry & Pippin (with Roslyn Cossins) - Project Sisyphus - Dee Range - Kristof Robertson aka Kriestoph Socrates Robertsonopoulis - Kristof Robertson aka Special K and The Beast - Kristof Robertson aka DJ Kristof and Professor Steven Hawking - Kristof Robertson aka The Insultan of Swing - Kristof Robertson aka Kristof Expressly - Tom Smith - Sudden Death - Jake Waters
I have also received commitments from: - Carl Hatmaker - Robert Lund - the great Luke Ski - Worm Quartet
HOW TO PARTICIPATE 1) Check out the demo and the lyrics below, then record *your* version of the song. Put your unique musical stamp on it. Make it your own. Be the cake. 2) Optional: While you're at it, make a second recording, substituting "girl" for "boy" in the last line. I'll include both versions on the CD. 3) Send it to me. I'd prefer MP3s via email (spaff at spaff dot com), but I'm flexible. If you need a mailing address, let me know.
THE DEMO Here is a simple demo of the song, courtesy of Jake Waters (who graciously did this despite having a killer cold at the time): www.spaff.com/lund/birthdayboy.mp3
THE LYRICS: We celebrate your birthday Even if you don't Be glad you're getting older 'Cause when you're dead you won't! So happy happy birthday From everyone you know Now we will light the candles And birth - day - boy - you - blow!
THANK YOU ...to everyone who has contributed, especially for your patience. I promise that the CD is still going to happen. On the bright side, the delay is making the collection that much better.
