Facts:
  • Alexei himself doesn't appear in this bit. Mark Williams plays George Formby - presumably due to the resemblance. (Stavro Arrgolus)
  • From the 2nd episode of the first series of the British TV show "Alexei Sayle's Stuff". First broadcast 10/20/1988. (Stavro Arrgolus)
  • Song Lyrics:
In sixteen sixty-six an apple fell on Newton’s head
as he was sittin’ out upon the lawn.
When he woke from his kip,
    it gave him the pip,
And thus the law of gravity was born.
He said this law, it’s true,
    I’m tellin’ you,
And applies to pairs of bodies everywhere
    An attraction you can state,
    proportional to their weights,
in accordance with me little rule of inverse square.

But now we know that the celestial equation
    really on occasion's pretty daft
I, impressed, would never have guessed
When an object moves, it’s heavier than when it’s at rest.

The laws of perihelion motion have changed.
Our cosmic notions now can be compared.
One night in my observatory, we’ve reached an impasse.
Now tell me what’s the matter, said the lovely young lass.
I said it’s latent energy condensed into mass,
'Cause it’s E equals M C squared; it never varies.
    Yes, it’s E equals M C squared,
    Not on your nelly.
    No, it’s E equals M C squared!

Indeed it does. This short fake B&W clip in the video is from a larger comedy bit in S1 Ep2 of "Alexei Sayle's Stuff" about "Einstein, The Lost Years" or something with similar wording.

The song isn't actually named like "Word Association" or "Panic" (I should probably add those as well), but the name of the fake movie is. "It's Up Uranus (1936)" flashes on the screen just before the song, so I call the song that as it's funnier than the obvious assumed title.

If there's an Alexei Sayle comedy album containing the song with a different name, I'll change it to whatever that is.

He even gets in a subtle boner joke. He tells the "lovely young lass" when she asks what it is that "it's latent energy condensed into mass".

Sounds like the e=mc squared song.
