August 30 - 12:30 pm EDT

R ecovery time is winding down and "getting on with it" time arrives this weekend. The little bastards are back in school and the peace & quiet is palpable.

Wayne sent me the current podcastable spreadsheet, the rig is set up in a relatively quiet room and I can hear the noisy, ethereal Vikings screaming "Get on with it!", so it must be time to make the podcast.

Down the street a mile or so, they're setting up the noise machine called the Spencer (agricultural) Fair which takes place every year at this time and makes the roads impassible, so escape from the area is more or less wishful thinking this weekend.

A fine excuse to stay home, sit around and make MMP-19.

As you must know by now, the show will be about ass, shiny metal ones and not, and all (or most) of the things going in and coming out of it. Be content - if I had known I'd end up having to make the show myself, ass wouldn't have been a strong enough subject. MMP-19 is heavily modified from its previous form which was originally to complement the 3 Stooges contest months ago.

I've bought food, gassed up the car, did the things I needed to do outside and now I can focus on making the show this weekend. And it'll be posted...when it's done - even if it takes weeks. I'm going to insist on getting as much of the show right the first time. Hopefully, it won't blow goats. If goats were to be involved, I could just say the hell with it, go to the fair and see all the goats I want.

Since I've been writing the scripts for the podcast and TMMS for the past couple of years anyway, the pace and style of the show will remain the same. Maybe a smidgen more profanity, but no more than what you hear in Emi's show. Not going to go nuts with it.

In other news, we have...news. And events. These site functions are working again, so if you're an artist with a lot to plug - and you know who you are - the events page can be used again to sell tickets to shows, plug albums, t-shirts, CDs, rubber hamsters or whatever. A planned redesign will make these pages all look a bit better and a mention on the homepage will draw attention to the features which are currently tucked neatly away in an efficient drop down box. "I think we can do better than that."

New Mad Music Podcast With Retired Pirate Bastard Commodore Stavro arrives to annoy your senses sometime in September! Rated ARRRRR!

August 23 - 2 am EDT

T he medical adventure continues....

Today, a consultation with those responsible for my latest gut repair told me I'd have to wear this wrap thing around my guts for three months!? I think I'd better plan on washing more of the blood out of it then. It may be a little late now, though. Having it not stink will have to do. It's not all bad. It holds in the disgusting loose skin from where the hernia was. It's the nastiest muffin top you can imagine...no, don't imagine it. It's nasty.

The good news is that I've been given semi-official permission to resume my life (what there was of it). Among other things, I can now do the mountain of dishes I left months ago, try to get my mower working again and...with the help of a new month's supply of ludicrously powerful pharmaceuticals, slap together MMS-156. And who knows - maybe I'll crank up that sad looking news section of ours while I'm at it.

Yes, I'm feeling better, so it's game on! The old PC I set up in a quieter room with Audacity & a microphone back at the beginning of June is still ready to go and (after buying groceries for the first time since late May and doing the aforementioned mountain of dishes) now I can try to figure out how the hell to make a show.

If I had any brains, I'd try to make a podcast first, but nooooooo, I've gotta chuck my whole ass into this and make a the 2 hour show first, don't I? ...Hmm, maybe I should make MMP-19 first... It's script is still complete, of course. It's called "It's Up Uranus". You can work out for yourself what it's about.

So, here's the plan:

• Buy some damn overpriced unhealthy food

• Do disgusting/exhausting household chores

• Eat newly purchased unhealthy food while making new shows

That ought to do it.

August 13 - 10:45 am EDT

T he past couple of weeks have been...interesting.

I expected to rot alone in various amounts of pain from the operation. It was going to be about blood, 7 inch scars (I still have pictures), bandages and pain...but mostly pain.

Instead, the Olympics shook me out of my misery and provided a much needed distraction (much in the way this site does on a daily basis - but this was more intense) during my continuing recovery. The streaming on the net and the crappy NBC time shifted replays made having to stink and rot in blood-stained (I still don't know what the name of this wrap thing around my waist holding my guts in is called) bandages a bit more tolerable. I feel a lot better today for having watched it and for once, procrastinating about the operation paid off with some rare good timing on my part.

And now, I'm sitting here watching Shark Week, which just began. For once, I'm getting my money's worth out of the psychotically overpriced cable TV. For the past 40 years or so, summer has been a season of rerun death on the boob tube, but this year it has helped my recovery immensely. Thank you, programming jackoffs.

In other news, Wayne has added Facebook links to the site over the past few days and we've gained a couple dozen new members. He's also fixed many annoying broken things that he can't remember that I complained about months (or years) ago and I can't remember because I'm full of painkillers. Well, the fixing's the important part.

If you have more lucidity than I do (most of you do right now) and can think of something that needs fixing on the site, don't keep it to yourself. Put it here or on the thread Wayne made for such things.

And remember kiddies, if all goes well (a big if), "The Mad Music Show With Commodore Stavro" begins sometime in September (after I see the surgeon again). It'll likely blow goats in the beginning and then greatly improve with practice, trial & error. The music style will remain exactly the same since the same maniac will be putting it together as before. Just give a listen and stick with it for a while. ...or else you might just get an Asphalt Aardvark™ upside the head.

August 3 - 10:30 pm EDT

Today, I got up off my lazy, unstable ass, looked around and thought, "This is a spider-infested fucking pigsty! How did I let it get like this?" After months, I had finally had enough. I then went out and did some of the household tasks mentioned below.

Why is this significant? After all, it's been three weeks since the operation. I was outside riding aardvarks and booting little bastards off my lawn almost immediately after my cancer surgery. It occurs to me now how long ago that was. Recovery isn't quite as quick now. This was proven today during my trip - and 'trip' is a good description for it as it seemed quite surreal. Damn painkillers. I'm sure it's no big deal; Paul McCartney probably experiences this sort of thing all the time.

I had no choice. Bills needed to be paid and mail had to be retrieved. But maybe I should wait a bit longer before going to the next town over to shop for food (There are two supermarkets in this town, but both are ludicrously expensive. Fuck them both). My car weighs almost three tons and I don't want to squash any victims with it because I imagined I saw some rubber hamsters walking across the hood.

August 1 - 10:30 pm EDT

T he medical adventure continues.

Today, I went back to the hospital and had the drain in my guts that caused all the trouble last week removed. The hole has a gauze patch over it. I'd be concerned about it if the exact same thing didn't happen after my cancer surgery. That one healed ok, so... All that remains is the blood-stained wrap-around holding in my guts. It will remain in place for three more weeks until I see the surgeon again. Hopefully, my intestines will also remain in place.

It's now that I realize that I have no more excuses to be a lazy bastard. Christ, I hate when that happens! I hurt too much today, but tomorrow, I must begin to deal with, among other things, the dishes which I've left for three months, the extremely dead car battery which I need to remove and recharge...and it seems I haven't been to the dump for six weeks or so. Or the bank. Or the post office. I have a full plate of household tasks ahead. The one thing I don't have to do is mow the lawn. The drought has fried it golden brown.

After I get my house in some semblance of order and recovered a bit more, I want to continue making the MMS I started before my health turned south again. It was about hygiene, remember? The script's complete. Just have to make it.

Here is a Photoshop-colored portrait of "retired pirate Commodore Stavro" from the same artist who gave us the "dread pirate Captain Wayne" drawing on the site header. Wayne got the colors better than my attempt at it, so I replaced the picture with his version. Thanks to Chris Pallace for making such a marvelous drawing. Notice the Norwegian Blue on his shoulder. Lovely plumage! Had to nail it down to get it to stay there.

Why drag out the picture now after 6 years? The plan is to use it in the MMS logo for the guest hosted episodes. Need a good logo. Have you noticed all the other shows have logos on their show pages? Not TMMS or its podcast. I'd like to sort that out before Labor Day.

The blog titles I've been using of late are chapter titles from the Gin Tama manga. Even the colors used in the drawing are taken directly from Uchuu Senkan Yamato. God, I'm such an otaku...

July 25 - 1:15 pm EDT

More fun post-op recovery adventures. As the title suggests, this is a bit disgusting, so be warned.

Today as I woke up, the plastic blood drain from the operation (I also had one for my cancer surgery, but that was in my neck) burst and both I and my bed became a ocean of blood. I'm unharmed, but cleaning this in my condition is a nightmare. True to my nature, the first thing I thought of was a quote from the final episode of Blackadder III. Baldrick quips, "Blood's hell to shift. I've gotta get it in soak!" So that's what I did. I took off the blood-drenched appliance that had been holding in my guts after the operation and got it in soak. After hand-washing it and a good rinse, it's in the dryer on 'delicate' now.

The bed is a mess. I'll work out what the hell to do about that after the emergency visit from the visiting nurse today. I have a camera now (free prize from Nielsen - been a member for 15 years). I'm contemplating grossing everyone out with all this just to drive home the reality of it all. After I have something to hold in my guts again, of course. I'm just crazy, not insane.

July 21 - 1 pm EDT

I t's over. Another fun hospital adventure full of pain, disorientation, ritual humiliation, pain, indifferent treatment, pain, having lots of new holes made in you, crazed roommates, pain and, of course, pain.

Fun Fact: I had a massive 'ventral abdominal wall' hernia with major 'abdominal reconstruction'. Why didn't "Weird Al" warn us about this one in that song?! Not his job, I suppose. But I'm here to tell you that there really are many "common types of hernias that you can get". ...And that your abdomen can actually fall apart and require reconstruction.

Thanks to a bit of pharmacological overkill, I can sit up in my chair and type this while contemplating going down into the town to get more that are waiting for me at the drugstore. Is it wise to drive a nearly 3 ton car while full of considerably more powerful painkillers than usual and bandaged up like I just escaped from a musty tomb in the Valley of the Kings? Probably not, but there's no one else alive to do it for me, so the FIDIM factor is high. Unless my car battery's dead again. Then it doesn't matter.

It's a perfect day for it. Sunny, 72°, slight breeze. All the things you think about in February when you're sitting around with a zillion tons of snow everywhere that you don't feel up to shoveling and generally cursing your environment. Too bad it'd be medically inadvisable to go out.

All I can really do (safely) is sit here and play video games on this PC I bought a month or two ago. Everything else is unsafe, painful and generally not doctor-approved. Rarely does one have medically approved carte blanche to sit on your ass and play video games for days on end, so I'm taking advantage of it. ...Even though that's all I ever seem to do anyway. The new Sims 3 expansion pack and the Portal 2 fan-made test chambers are fast and well rendered with this new machine.

My newly rearranged intestines are telling me to stay put or they'll hurt me. I'm inclined to listen.

June 27 - 1 pm EDT

Oh, yes, a Boomtown Rats reference. Hopefully, I can avoid the outcome of the next line of that.

For quite a while, I've been staring at the ceiling from bed and occasionally getting up to do a household task or two and looking in on the site. All while planning for the medical shenanigans scheduled for next month when I get my insides ripped open again. They threw in a colonoscopy to add insult to injury and to fatten their wallets. Bastards.

Yesterday, I slowly and carefully went out and bought some large capacity pet feeder/waterers for my cat so it won't starve while I'm being cut up. I'm debating whether or not to clean up the place a bit now since it becomes an exercise in futility if I don't survive the procedure. So on my shopping trip, I said screw it and also bought some games to take my mind off it all.

6/28 addendum: Sorry if I'm being too melodramatic or just spewing TMI. I seek no sympathy. After numerous procedures, my bastardly nature laughs at danger and drops ice cubes down the vest of fear. But I make a terrible patient. The mess I'm in is entirely my fault. I somehow pissed off a surgeon long ago and she botched a simple operation (purposely, IMO - no more female doctors for me. I don't care how sexist that sounds. What's left of my health is at stake) making this complex one necessary. I have to learn to keep my big gob shut or this is just going to become worse.

The show I want to make is on hold until the medical foolishness is complete and I've had a chance to recover a bit - assuming I do recover. As I get older, that becomes more and more of a question mark. If Wayne wants to make MMS-156 first, it would be nice. I can make more playlists later. Got a big list of ideas that aren't going to run out anytime soon.

In other news, the carpenter ants and field mice had a meeting and decided to set about taking over my house while I'm occupied with other things. I've lots of traps and lots of spray since my indoor cat can't catch mice or even ants. Sick or not, I predict they're going to lose this little conflict. I just toss the mouse corpses out the door when I catch them and they vanish by the next day. Since I live near the woods, I try not to think about what ate them. There are no longer any cats in this area. Something must have gotten them as well. Damn hippies, do NOT tell me that 'no one needs guns' and we can all live together in peace and harmony. Fuck that. If I see a another coyote or bear in my yard, they're getting a dose of .454 Casull. Bears think small caliber bullets tickle. Screw the environment. These animals are out of control and are harming people.

June 12 - 11:15 pm EDT

T hose of you who frequent this site already know how it is. The site runs relatively smoothly, but the membership is below 300 - less than 1/10 of what it once was. The shows in current production continue to be made on time...all but one. I'm attempting to fill in a bit, but I must do it when I feel up to it. Which is practically never. After all, if it wasn't this way, I could work.

So here's how it is. I've made some recordings with Audacity and am mixing bgm with it all to make it sound less strange/horrifying. The songs and script, of course, have long since been assembled. It's coming along. Screwing around with the sounds is endlessly amusing. 'Creating' has been less difficult than 'feeling up to creating'. The spirit is willing...

And the hospital(s) aren't helping. I had to bitch and shout (something I'm quite good at) to get them to make five appointments just one. It's a loooong drive. And I have a dentist appointment this week. I can now have pain in my mouth as well as everywhere else. How nice.

I'm going to fight to get a show done this month, but no promises. It's better than waiting until next Xmas for shows. And they want me to get in shape as well. Isn't losing 45 pounds enough? Barely crack 200 now. Apparently it's not good enough. I'm ordered to walk, lift weights and eat non-crap - so they can cut me open again. ...just can't do it. I can't make a pancake to save my ass, but Pop-Tarts are so easy to toast. They want me to eat Colon Blow for breakfast or something. Not happening.

Had a go at eliminating dead videos from the archive. Took an hour, but I got them all.

Good one. These can be used on individual show pages depending on which of us hosts that week.

If all goes well, I'll start hosting TMMS in October and maybe get in some good Halloween shows.

CRAP! Who uses "radio" nowadays? It's mostly streaming audio. Should I just drop "radio" and use "audio" or "media"? Clear Channel even had to change their company name to accommodate media.

What I'm really after are static banners that would fit well on the top of the show pages. They aren't for the homepage. Have you noticed that the other shows have nice logos on their show pages and we don't?

The size should be large enough to fit well on the top of those pages without being too big or too small. Use your discretion. The main page can use my picture, but when Wayne hosts a podcast (and he will - I'll bug him until he does), you can use his banner for that week's show page.

Since it's a podcast, you'll also have to make the tiny show avatars that go into iTunes. Miniaturization will be the real challenge.

Meanwhile, I'll look for the good sized picture of Cap'n Wayne that he sent me and I'll send it to you.

1) How Big is "Big"? 100 x 100 (avatar) 468 x 60 (standard banner) 640 x 480 (movie trailer) or something in between? Is this going on the home page?
2) I have a good sized picture of your character but not of Captain Wayne.
3) Is the banner static or do you want the text animated?

This HP keyboard I got with the new PC I bought a couple months ago has all sorts of unfamiliar symbols on it including 'Beats Audio', whatever the hell that is. It must have an 'any' key somewhere.

And now, a polite request that's really a Photoshopping challenge. Dave, could you make a big banner for the restart of the Mad Music podcast next month? It should feature my current avatar on the far right of it with the words, "The Mad Music Podcast With Retired Pirate Commodore Stavro" to the picture's left.

AND

A banner of identical size with Cap'n Wayne's familiar picture seen in the header placed on the far left of the banner with the words, "The Mad Music Podcast With Cap'n Wayne" to its right. He wants to also make some podcasts, so we'll need both.

Those are the only necessary elements that need to go into them. The rest you can improvise. If you choose to accept the challenge, of course.

Podcasts it is. Next show: TMMP-19 "It's Up Uranus". Next year, I'll spring for the new Office 2013 I've read about. Meanwhile, I'm going to need a new spreadsheet with a list of what's podcastable - I'd need one anyway to make new podcast scripts.

Going to keep it simple for the first couple of shows. I can't do sci-fi or movie segments - I'm only into sci-fi, after all. My instinct is to make a segment of what interests me, but every time I do that, the guys in the white suits with the butterfly nets chase me. Maybe after some practice.

I've lots of bgm and I can get the sfx from your wav site. It should be an interesting September...

But the priority for today is: Get some food in the house - The cupboard and fridge are both empty after 3 months and a hospital stay.

Hey, a little background music when mixing can really help cover the environment noise - it does for me usually.

I'd suggest the podcast - keep it simple then as you get proficient you can do the bigger shows. I can be back to do some occasionally soon as well - between the 2 of us we might be able to revive these things. With the Facebook thing upping membership I'd like to keep them seeing new/changed/improved stuff.

It's the other side of the year from Xmas, so we could get away with another bulk e-mail with minimal opt-outs. It's gotta jump out at them with pictures & logos like the Xmas e-mails do, though.

I've no use for it, but I read that the whole Facebook thing is popular with the young people (get off my lawn, ya whippersnappers!). Some of the individual song pages have multiple 'likes' already. Since we've only 1/10 the actives we once had, anything that gets the site more attention is worth a try.

My daughter just LIVES for Shark Week. I said that after watching "2-Headed Shark Attack" that I'd seen it all, and nothing else could be more tragic than that horrible movie. But, we parents do indulge our kids - I think I'll hide up in my office working on the site.

Oh yeah, I think we should send out another bulk e-mail. This one announcing the Facebook stuff and inviting them to "Like" the new page. At least when they do they'll get a regular reminder that we're still here and maybe they won't forget us as easily. You see when you "Like" a page, every post on that page is then repeated on their Wall automatically. 5-6 posts a week will keep us on their mind!

These Shark Week shows are getting more and more idiotic, presumably for an increasingly ignorant population. I notice the words are getting shorter and the music is getting louder. It just makes me want to go DUUUHHHHHHHH! I hope a shark bites that annoying Survivorman guy in half.

Yes, he does - megawavs.com

I asked about it since these wavs would go well in the guest hosted shows - and I lost the address when the latest PC power supply failed.

I still have many tasks before I start on that show again. Months of dishes to do, several trips to the dump, tons of laundry, haven't vacuumed this year; the list is endless.

Aww, you're no fun any more. Anyway, here's another post to put the blog at the top of the list again.

Nice job Stavro. It makes a good avatar also.

Here is a badly Photoshop-colored portrait of "retired Commodore Stavro". Dave AuJus could have done a considerably better job, but I'm full of the FIDIM spirit today (among other things). Thanks to Chris Pallace for making such a marvelous drawing and to Wayne for sending me a copy of it. Notice the Norwegian Blue on his shoulder. Lovely plumage! Had to nail it down to get it to stay there.

I have both. The nurse was here today. Nurses don't get your pills in this state - strong union. This is The People's Republic of Massachusetts, after all. The aid worker will be here Wednesday. She gets the pills. This is a familiar thing to me. I've had operations more serious (if less painful) than this one and I came to know the state's visiting nurse system in all its bureaucratic insanity only too well.

For example, the home help aid will go shopping or get pills or whatever - but she has to perform a physical task (wash patient, trim nails, etc.) first. Just because. Insanity.

...Seems like you should have a daily visiting nurse or worker to help make you one hot meal.

Start calling Insurance co, Department of Human Services or Senior Services and see if you can get the meds picked up and delivered. Seems like you should have a daily visting nurse or worker to help make you one hot meal.

Thanks for everyone's concern. I'm feeling a bit better and will be able to do more...in a month or so. That's how long it took the last time I did this sort of thing. I can wait.

Thank you. This week, I had a difficult time doing the one task I'm responsible for- to 'not die'. The hardest things remain to do - make it smell like something other than shit in here and remove all of the cardboard (that I bought the new computer in) so it won't look like a hoarder's house when the visiting nurses arrive inconveniently early tomorrow. Try doing all that maintenance with your stomach ripped open. The good news is that maybe they can get me the meds the hospital prescribed because I sure as hell can't drive into town and snag them.

In a few days, depending on how things go, I'll cut down on playing Sims 3 and resume a more active role in the site again. I'm just going to watch from the sidelines and catch up a bit. I missed the coverage of Comic-Con completely. After all that, production of MMS-156 will resume...but not for a while.

Back from the hernia surgery. Hospital visit took a week. Limited mobility, limited thought processes. No limit to the pain, though. Commanded to rest, something I do every day anyway. Just letting you know that I just got home, I'm not dead yet and I refuse to be put on the cart.

I think that he said that he was going in the hospital soon for a procedure. Let's hope that he is ok.

Maybe he left with all the ones who gave up on it 2 Novembers ago when the site wasn't working well and page loading had ground to a halt. That's when we lost everyone but the core membership. It's been that way ever since. We seem to have 275 core members who stick with the site no matter what.

Make some good shows for them, you guys.

Again, best of luck with the surgery and recovery.

I've started getting help with health issues-vision, the pod doctor, prostate problems, other stuff.

Root canal tooth still healing with temp filling. Dentist did not want to put in the permanent filling two days before going on a two week vacation.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. If I do well, I'll make a horde of shows and hopefully, they won't suck. They'll be my first effort and I'll be full of more meds than usual after the procedure. A challenge, to be sure.

I know, TMI...

Somedays when I'm not in meetings at work - I click in.

Also please survive - we want the "First Mate" to make a show or two (or many more).

Quick question. Does anyone besides me actually listen to our streaming radio channel that Dave made such a nice banner for? There's always a good tune playing on that.

Thanks. I have a new supply of the pain & sleep meds I ran out of. I feel better already. For now, all I can do is lie here and watch my lawn grow out of control while looking after the site and wait for next month when they tinker with my insides again.

Wanted to make the show, but was prescribed bedrest and "very hard drugs". Like that's different than usual.... Will make the show when it becomes even remotely possible to make it.

Root canal? Nothing's worse than a temporary filling in a molar. I wouldn't trade all the pain I have now for that. Make sure they do the whole procedure as quickly as possible.

Best of luck with your helath needs.
I'm on the way to getting new glasses. And a root canal (hopefully) finished by the end of the month.
