Detroit radio legend Dick Purtan announced his retirement from the air waves this morning on his WOMC, 104.3fm show, after being on the Detroit airwaves for 45 years. His last show will be March 26th, 2010.

Michigan's Radio and TV Guideis a good collection point for the many reports now coming from other news services.

I first listened to Dick Purtan when he kept me up at night those first few weeks at Keener 13 (WKNR, 1310am). Wisely, they knew this trait was better suited for morning, where I also followed him daily before heading to school.
After college and 7 years of being away from the Detroit area, being on and off the radio myself, I was pleased to rediscover Dick Purtan when I returned. I have been a regular listener of his for at least the past 10 years on WOMC-FM. (An irregular listener before that).
While sad to hear of his leaving the show, I do wish Dick Purtan the best retirement he can enjoy.
